A little side info: The winner build probably should have been disqualified from the beginning, since it was taken from pacnelvonat's german vehicles pack with minor modifications and with no credit, and the rules of the challenge state that no stealing is allowed. Of course, it's up to KSB24 to decide if it was modified enough to not be considered stolen but I have a feeling he didn't even know that it was taken from someone else

I'd say my biggest recent disappointment was my Olympic and Titanic. They both got over 50 upvotes but for the amount of work I put into them, I expected at least about 80-ish upvotes, but unfortunately I screwed up by making them be too many parts so most players couldn't even try them out.

  • Pre-Dreadnought Challenge 5 months ago

@Tang0five The Royal Sovereign class is considered as the first real pre-dreadnought type battleship but the line between them and the preceeding ironclad type ships is pretty blurry, so if your design was maybe commissioned slightly earlier than 1890 or something but still generally resembles a pre-dread, then you are still good to go, the 1890 year is more of a guideline here:)

  • Borodino (1901) 6 months ago

@Blueshift Im glad you like it! If your PC struggles with this, I recommend giving a try to the 1990 part version (link on the top of the description), it has way less detail but all the major functions (all guns and torps usable, walker, bridge interior, HUD) are still there, maybe that will work better:D

  • Borodino (1901) 7 months ago

@soldier289 I'd love it if you did that! It's already the best Mikasa I could find on the website (hence why I used it for the screenshots), but a little update probably wouldn't hurt

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (5/5):

The ship has a sleek and speedy design while still retaining the typical dreadnought features, giving off a quite aggressive and fearsome vibe.

    - Design/Accuracy (12/15):

The design seems a tiny bit mixed, the superstructure being somewhat underdeveloped (reminiscent of early dreadnoughts) while features some newer tech such a catapult launched seaplane, but the latter seems to be the result of a refit (along with other things)
The ship seems to take a lot of inspiration from the Japanese fast dreadnoughts of the era with its design and especially the max speed of 27 knots.
Adding the ship's motto below the name at the stern was a bit strange to me but not problematic. The ship's bottom being so curvy and quite shallow is also quite unusual for a dreadnought, I imagine it would roll a lot in heavy seas.
The motor launch design is a bit weird to me, they kind of look like little yachts rather than military boats.

    - Details (14/15):

The ship features reasonable details, not going over the top but still working out a lot of parts. Things like chairs, speaking tubes, binoculars, even signs warning not to use naked flames near ammunition really stood out to me.
Individual weapons like the open top AA guns have some quite okay detailing on them.
Overall, the whole ship has a nice balance of details and part count, trying to bring the most out while staying within the limitations

    - Features (17/20):

The build features a long list of features, from usable, camera-aimed main guns and secondaries, auto-aimed anti air weaponry, torpedoes, a bridge interior and even a movable crane.
Having gyro control for steering and jet engines for propulsion was a bit underwhelming compared to the rest of the functions.
The half finished plane launching system is such a shame, the system seems to be well thought out (although I'm personally not a fan of using a missile as the plane's propulsion), too bad it was not finished and as a result, doesn't work.

    - Build Quality (9/10):

There are some great part count saving methods in use, such as using a label image for the ship's emblem, or using other gizmos creatively to achieve greater detail.
Using the vanilla propellers to save parts was a nice idea, however, the scimitar propeller style was not the best choice in terms of looks.

    - Performance (16/20):

The ship performs well, quite easy to control and works mostly well even on the ocean mod, apart from a little bit of bounciness which could have been improved.
The weapons are very easy to control although accurate aiming at large distances is not easy.

    - Description and Information (15/15):

The description is very very detailed and is worth a small wikipedia page, with a full history, diagrams, many many screenshots, specifications and much more. While overall it might be a bit long, the amount of content is has very well compesates for it.

    Additional Points (-0, +6):

+6 for the extra description effort (lengthy lore, diagrams, blueprints, even a battle map)

    Total: 94

    Congratulations for your first place!

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (5/5):

Upon first look the ship look marvellous! Smooth and clean design while perfectly representing the original ship. The first test run went well although I had to use faster time because the turrets are very very slow.

    - Design/Accuracy (15/15):

To my knowledge, the build represents the original ship perfectly well, I didnt find any innacuracy.

    - Details (12/15):

The ship is very nicely detailed although I feel like more could have been added such as railings, stairs etc. but things like the windows are nice additions.

    - Features (15/20):

The ship has all of its weaponry being usable, all being auto-aimed and some nice rudder+custom prop based movement

    - Build Quality (9/10):

The hull is just beautifully smooth and the gun aiming system is insanely sophisticated with each gun only being active if the selected target is within their firing arcs.
The build itself is super efficient, with fuselage slicing used all over the place to reduce parts and the builder also uses other parts very creatively, such as the wheels on the cranes. Label parts are also used a lot and the way the fuselage inlets are used on places like the funnels or searchlights is just ingenious.

    - Performance (17/20):

The ship behaves excellently with the ocean mod, it sails smoothly even at some massive waves.
I'm personally not a fan of auto-aim only weapons but they are perfectly valid and get the job done. I feel like the main turrets are a tiny bit too slow, it's realisitc, but could be a bit faster to be more enjoyable. The aiming system itself works flawlessly however.
The use of custom propellers and actual rudder based steering is also great and works very nicely.

    - Description and Information (14/15):

The description is awesome, with a great balance of text and screenshots and nice formatting. It includes a history section as well as the controls, and I really like the additional effort of building a whole new ship just for the screenshots.

    Additional Points (-0, +3):

+3 for the effort of building a König class from scratch just to show it next to Bayern on the screenshots

  • Vanitatum-class Dreadnaught, Vanitatum 9 months ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (5/5):

The ship appears elegant, mighty and fearsome. The detail work immediately struck me and the design was overall pleasant to look at with the camo giving a great first impression.

    - Design/Accuracy (13/15):

The design matches a refitted dreadnought from the second half of the interwar period/early ww2 with cataputls and dual purpose anti air weaponry, although a ship from this era would probably have a bigger, more developed superstructure.
The width of the ship is just slightly too thick in my opinion, the torpedo bulge could be reduced a bit.

    - Details (15/15):

The detail work is astonishing. Even some very small details are worked out and they use some very creative solutions (more about this in the Build Quality segment).
The addition of things like rails around the catapult area, a small table with chairs, waving flags really stood out to me. The rigging is insanely worked out too with the adition of some nice signal flags too.
Additional detail work also put into things like the secondary and AA weaponry and some nice deck details.
The camouflage is simply incredible, very detailed (not to mention it's different on each side) and very pleasant to look at. It also somewhat achieves the goal of breaking up the ship's silhouette.

    - Features (16/20):

The ship has quite a list of features: apart from the main guns, the secondary and AA guns are also usable, down to the small 50 cal machine guns scattered around the ships. The addition of usable fixed aim torpedoes is also a great touch.
The addition of a catapult is great too, such a shame that it lacks an airplane to launch

    - Build Quality (9/10):

The overall quality of the build is great, such as not lagging my device too much, despite the large part count.
The build uses many creative solutions to reduce somewhat that part count though, including creative part usage for extra detail without extra parts (magnests, airbrakes, rotator backs etc.), a lot of fuselage slicing and even utilizes creative use of labels such as for making ladders.
I especially liked the efficient way the signal flags were made.
Using the vanilla propellers to save parts was a nice idea, although I personally feel like that about 50 parts (my personal estimate to recreate all 4 props) for a custom built propellers wouldnt have made too big a difference.
despite all the part saving efforts, the build still passed the 2500 part count limit.

    - Performance (15/20):

The ship's speed is fine, however the rudder shift is very slow to point that it was slightly running the experience: swinging out to one direction was fine, going back to 0 was very slow.
The main weaponry had a similar problem: while I would have been fine with the turrets turning at a realistic speed, the fact that the camera aim was equally slow. I feel like if the camera had faster turning speed, having to "wait up" for the turrets, would have made the experience much better.
The secondary weapon aim was also quite slow but mostly tolerable.
The ship work quite well with the ocean mode though, and the system to dampen the waves is super clever.

    - Description and Information (12/15):

The description is very long and detailed with some very neat additions. The explanatory pdf is great and the commissioned shipgirl is also a nice little addition although it could have been displayed in the description itself, instead of through a clickable link.
I find the amount of screenshots a bit too much. I'm also a not a fan of leaving specific details like the years to the player to decide, it's your ship, you should specify these.
The nickname is also a nice addition to the lore

    Additional Points (-5, +9):

-5 for passing the 2500 line 1 time
    +6 for the camouflage
+3 for the extra description effort

    Total: 89

    Congratulations for your third place!

  • Hida class Battleship [Dreadnought Challenge (1906-1920)] 9 months ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (5/5):

Upon first look, the ship very well captures the look and feel of japanese dreadnoughts and could probably pass for a real design as well. Taking it out to the sea was pretty good as well, spawning on the ocean mod is a bit bouncy at first, but once it settles, it performs quite well then. The controls were also quite easy to use.

    - Design/Accuracy (15/15):

As mentioned above, the ship's design is really great, and if it were a real life design, it would fit perfectly into the IJN fleet of the time.

    - Details (13/15):

The ship has some pretty nice detail work. Not too much, but still has some, quite balanced. Little things like the speaking tubes were nice additions.
While the turrets have some railings on their tops but there are no railings anywhere else on the ship, which I feel like should have been added.
The rigging is also a great addition as well as the ladders on the turrets and the little ammo boxes next to the AA guns.

    - Features (15/20):

The ship has all of its weaponry being usable, from the main battery (which has centralized aiming) through the secondaries and the AA guns (which are auto aimed).
One thing I feel like could have been better is the separation of the port and starboard side secondaries either by AGs or by simply renaming them, because currently both sides fire all the time.
Making even the searchlights movable was a nice little addition. They dont really do anything just turn, but it's still a nice little aesthetic touch.
The build uses an interesting mix of jet engines and wings for turning, and jet engines only for movement (though it has custom built propellers that turn but they are only for decoration)

    - Build Quality (6/10):

The build uses a few part saving methods but I feel like more could have been done, for example using slicing for the rigging instead of making each cable a separate part. The railings on the turrets are also slightly wasteful. Despite these, the ship is still quite beautifully constructed.
One thing I especially liked is the use of a magnet for the chrysanthemum flower on the bow, a very creative solution.
What I feel like is a missed opportunity is the rudder and propellers: the builder took the time to make a rotating custom propeller and then didn't place any wings in it and used jets for movement, even though they could have made the propulsion using the propellers.
The same applies to the steering: there is a working rudder and it even has a wing in it to provide actual steering power, but the builder also added steering jetd too.

    - Performance (10/20):

The ship starts a bit rough when being spawned on the ocean mod and needs some time before it stops bouncing and settles down, however after that, it performs mostly well on the waves (larger ones make it bounce again though).
The mixed movement and steering system is a bit strange to me. It gets the job done but the opportunity to make it realistic using actual propellers and rudder was there. Nonetheless, it works well.
The ship lacks any kind of limitiation for speed so it can exceed the designed max speed by a lot.

    - Description and Information (12/15):

The description is very nice with a great mix of text and screenshots, all nicely formatted. It includes a brief history section, specifications, controls, and an arry of screenshots that is just enough to present the ship without being too much.
