The Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter is an American light jet fighter developed primarily for export to allied countries. The primary requirements for the aircraft were low production costs, as well as the ability to engage in maneuverable combat and attack ground targets. As early as April 1962, the Pentagon announced that the F-5 would be supplied to allied countries under military aid programs, and in August of that year, a contract was signed for the serial production of 170 single-seat F-5A combat aircraft and two-seat F-5B trainers. Various modifications of the aircraft have been used in numerous armed conflicts around the world, with the last war in which these aircraft were used being the armed conflict in Yemen in 1994.
