The success of the Su-30K allowed the creation of a modification of the Su-30MK with a new radar, the ability to use RVV-AE missiles and a PGO for improved controllability. In 1996, India ordered the Su-30MKI, equipped with a radar with a penetrating phased array antenna and Al-31FP engines with thrust vector control. As a result, the Su-30 entered service not only in India, but also in China, Algeria, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Venezuela. The success of the Su-30 in export markets impressed the Russian Air Force, so in 2011 it was decided to order the Su-30MKI aircraft for the Russian Air Force under the designation Su-30SM. Su-30SM aircraft are still in service with the Russian Federation and were successfully used during the military operation in Syria.
The Su-30SM (NATO reporting name Flanker-H) is an all-weather multirole fighter developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau for the Russian Air Force to achieve air superiority. This version was based on the Su-30MKI for India. Despite the good range of the Su-27, it was insufficient for the Soviet air defense forces, which needed to cover vast territories. In 1986, designers began developing the Su-27PU, an improved two-seat version for long-range interception and performing airborne command post functions based on the Su-27UB combat trainer. The demonstration flight took place on 6 June 1987, the first prototype was ready on 31 December 1989, and the pre-production model on 14 April 1992. It was accepted into service as the Su-30. The aircraft was distinguished by an in-flight refueling system and additional equipment.
