The Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter is an American light jet fighter developed primarily for export to allied countries. The primary requirements for the aircraft were low production costs, as well as the ability to engage in maneuverable combat and attack ground targets. As early as April 1962, the Pentagon announced that the F-5 would be supplied to allied countries under military aid programs, and in August of that year, a contract was signed for the serial production of 170 single-seat F-5A combat aircraft and two-seat F-5B trainers. Various modifications of the aircraft have been used in numerous armed conflicts around the world, with the last war in which these aircraft were used being the armed conflict in Yemen in 1994.
The Yak-141 (NATO reporting name: Freestyle) is a Soviet/Russian carrier-based multirole vertical takeoff and landing fighter. The aircraft was initially developed as an attack aircraft to replace the Yak-38M and with a single power plant. However, during the design process, the customer's requirements changed, and it was decided to create a multirole fighter with a combined power plant of two lift engines and one main lift-cruise engine based on the Yak-41M attack aircraft. The deadline for submitting the fighter for state testing was repeatedly postponed, as a result of which the aircraft received a new designation - Yak-141. On March 9, 1987, the first flight was made, which launched state tests, as a result of which 12 world records were set in April 1991. Also that year, two flying prototypes of the Yak-141 (products 48-2 and 48-3) were sent for testing on the aircraft carrier Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov, during one of which an accident occurred, which put an end to the development of the Yak-141. The cause was a hard landing, which led to a fire and the second flying prototype was unsuitable for repair. In the conditions of the collapse of the USSR, there were no funds left for financing and the project was finally closed in 1992. The remaining prototype of the Yak-141 participated in exhibitions in Farnborough, and later, together with product 48-3 (according to some sources, it was restored from product 48-1, created for ground tests) at MAKS in order to attract foreign investors. The aircraft was highly rated, but no orders were received. Product 48-2 was sent to the Zadorozhny Museum, and 48-3 was placed in the Central Museum of the Russian Air Force.
