I Just Thought Of The Solution To Potential Airplane Hackers...

101k Wallaby  6.5 years ago

So, we all know that airplanes are becoming more automated every year. Planes like the Boeing 777 (Most technologically-advanced airliner), the Airbus A320 (First computer-flown airliner), Airbus A380 (Largest airliner), Boeing 787, Airbus A330-A350, Lockheed L-1011, various military aircraft, etc. It goes back all the way to the 1980's and even further. By now, people must have found a way to hack planes (which would explain MH370 perfectly). We need a solution, now.

I have just come up with a solution. What if the ATC were trained to fly aircraft? The air traffic controllers could perform a hack override on an aircraft in the extreme cases where the Pilots lose all control of a computerized aircraft. The ATC can simply select an aircraft on the screen and select hack override, and the Radar transmitter can send the aircraft a message to give ATC full control. The ATC that triggered the override can now see what the pilot sees thanks to a cockpit camera on the top of the captain's seat. The ATC will use a joystick to land the plane at the airport.

Well, what if the pilot's lose all radios? Then their aircraft would have a secondary transponder/RC receiver run by an individual battery. Then the ATC can connect to that to control the plane to a safe landing.

What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below! Please leave suggestions and constructive criticism!

I agree with @Tully2001. That is the best solution. However, I thought that MH370 was actually caused by the pilot committing suicide by crashing the plane intentionally. I guess we'll never know.

The problem with this is that then ATC controllers would have to be trained for EVERY plane under EVERY situation on top of the hacking. As if their job wasn't hard enough already!

I agree with Max and Bacon and a bit with Tull but the problem with AI is well it's hard to make it work with out going nuts and you would have to do that with every major airport just a Mechanical switch would be nesscacary with the old Manual controls basically just turning off the computer @MaximusTheMinimus @BaconAircraft @Tully2001

No offense, I think this will make the current situation worse.

But what if the hack disables atc’s ability to control the plane then?

@GINGER01 But planes don't operate on the internet, so you have to be either an insider or have very sophisticated homemade equipment.

@ForeverPie still a small group of rouge people controlling every plane. If ATC people can override one plane what's preventing it from going onto a massive scale. Just like a person hacking into a cooperation and stealing loads of people's private information. A small group can have millions of peoples information. Hacking on such a massive scale isn't a unheard of idea. If it happens to banks it could happen to planes. I'm just trying to see all the flaws.

I like it, it seems a bit like the new Thunderbirds, a better idea would be a radio jammer all frequency's apart from the ones necessary.

It wouldn't be 1 person controlling everything...

Imagine someone having control over ALL the planes in the sky. If one person controls all the planes in the world. There is no telling what damage could be done.

Also it's a lot harder to hack a plane then u think you can't do it remotely well the setup anyway

    Yup that's exactly what he's suggesting @WNP78

An Easter solution would be a mechanical override switch in the cockpit and installing the old wire systems in planes as a backup wouldn't be near as expenseve as what your sugesting

it's basically like how switcher locomotives are remote controlled, is what i'm getting

so... to stop people remotely controlling aircraft you're gonna add a backdoor to allow other people to remotely control aircraft and hope they don't find it?

Great idea until you pay off the ATC or threaten his family, or infiltrate the ATC (unlikely I know, but possible), or just hack into ATC’s system so you don’t have to hack the plane your self, air traffic control has done it for you.

But then you can hack the communication between the tower and the plane, that would make everything even worse...
The best way would be a manual swich to kill all radio-controls but not the voice-communication.

@ForeverPie it WOULD be cool, except now the terrorists don't even need to be on the plane, and they could take control of tonnes of planes at once....

@GINGER01 About the ATC joystick thing, there would only be 1 joystick per controller. The chances of an incident are so low, you wouldn't need that many controllers. Also, drone pilots can fly a UAV from the other side of the world with no feel whatsoever.

@ForeverPie Just trying to play devils advocate. First of all one person edward snowden. He worked for the NSA, which is part of the US department of defense. He went rogue. Plus the idea that ATC can hack planes won't sit well with the public. Also wouldn't this make ATC more hectic than it's already is? You would have people flying the airplanes as well as people directing other planes. As well wouldn't you need a joy stick and a person for every plane in the sky? That's a lot of people. Plus it takes time for signals to travel a certain distance. Critical seconds used up and by the time that signal gets there, it may be too late. As well To fly a plane one thing you need is feel. You need to fell the airplane turning left or climbing. An ATC operator won't feel this and may put wrong joystick maneuvers in.
