@WarshipDude They were 41,000 each x2 ships. As for the 'pocket' battleships, you are right on the money, German heavy cruisers were derisively called pocket battleships. My mistake.
@PrinceZuko Yup, that's my point. Raw performance isn't everything. The USN had to train and deploy thousands and thousands of brand new pilots and the F4U was not the plane for that task.
Looks pretty good. I like your attention to texture, the shape of the fuselage and the overall layout of the plane. The back story makes sense (I especially like the bit about political meddling). I like how you centered the location of the bombs with the center of mass and the gun placement is also excellent. The radio antenna cables give the plane a very realistic appearance and look great. For improvement, consider the size of internal components when designing things like wings and nacelles. There's not enough space in the nacelles for engines, ductwork, and the landing gear hydraulics. Your wings are also much too thin in terms of z axis (height), consider making the wing roots about 5 times thicker than the tips when viewed from the front.
I was hoping to see a good version of this thing. It's one of those planes that was kind of a big deal in its time, but not seen very often around here. Great job!
The joke in West Germany was that if you wanted one of these jets for yourself, just buy a few acres of farmland and wait for one to crash into it. A lot of pilots lost their lives trying to pilot this piece of crap.
@Gbhole Ironically, disabling shocks etc. usually makes landing smoother. If you don't, the wheel can travel upwards which causds the landing gear leg to scrape the ground and possibly break. Also, springy landing gear usually means that your plane will bounce down the runway like a trampoline. I know it doesn't seem realistic, but it is what it is.
@Ccdc I have all the control surfaces set to AG8 so that when you turn it off you basically disconnect the controls. I also have a gyroscope set up to activate when AG8 turns off, that way the plane flies nice and level instead of doing anything scary while the controls are turned off. Between the afterburners, wing sweep, flaps, missiles and trim, there's a lot to keep track of so I tried to make the controls as simple as possible. Funky trees makes it much easier, this is a great time to get into the game.
@jamesPLANESii Since the USSR tried to replace the An-2 with the PZL M-15, does that make it your most hated plane? Also, do you think sturdy carrier-based cargo planes like the Grumman Greyhound could be refurbished to make decent bush planes?
@DeezDucks In real life, they were so difficult to take off and land that the Navy refused to allow them on carriers. Part of a long line of Vought aircraft known for killing their own pilots.
Computer hardware is subject to diminishing returns. It's best to find a sweet spot in terms of performance / cost rather than just dumping money into the thing and expecting the moon. I upgraded my GPU in order to run VR, and it works great, but SP still runs like crap with builds over 1,000 parts.
Please spend many hours building a construct that won't get any upvotes so I can shamelessly use it to get upvotes. I have no respect at all for the stuff you've already submitted, and it's too much work for me to figure this stuff out.
You can usually find your way between the large islands by looking for little ones. Little, isolated islands form a sort of breadcrumb trail between the major islands.
@edensk It's ok. I agree about people overdoing the thrust, slapping 20 or 30 engines onto a box of fuel is one of the first things people do when they install Simpleplanes!
@edensk In my haste, I missed the mark on my afterburner thrust guess by a bit. 50-70% is a more reasonable estimate, depending on circumstances and the bypass ratio of the engine itself. I don't know where you got 30% from, however, as even the most inefficient zero-bypass turbojets can manage better than 50%.
As for acceleration, thrust to weight ratio is the single most important factor. Thrust to drag tends to determine top speed, particularly at low altitude. It seems quite strange to me that you would rely on such easily refuted information to criticize my attempt to help somebody.
For realistic acceleration you need to have realistic mass for your aircraft. For realistic engines, I often use multiple engines nested inside each other. Just an FYI, engaging the afterburner on a fighter jet usually adds another 70-75% thrust but doubles or even triples fuel consumption.
@Shnippy Do what @jamesPLANESii said. The max input directly controls the braking power. With a high enough max setting you can instantly stop from almost any speed and even float motionless in midair for 10 or 15 seconds.
@brians1209 Put the cockpit on a detacher. Engines will only work under specific circumstances, so you may have to do other stuff as well. My most recent upload uses remote control missiles that have basically unlimited range and cannot be locked onto or jammed. I assume other sorts of things can be done with the same technique.
@Noname918181 No big deal, your explanation is cleaner anyway. I just like to advertise that new clamp feature, it totally fixed a bunch of issues I had on my last plane.
@WarshipDude They were 41,000 each x2 ships. As for the 'pocket' battleships, you are right on the money, German heavy cruisers were derisively called pocket battleships. My mistake.
@FishMiner Sorry, got the terminology confused with their heavy cruisers. I will edit.
@PrinceZuko Yup, that's my point. Raw performance isn't everything. The USN had to train and deploy thousands and thousands of brand new pilots and the F4U was not the plane for that task.
@MAHADI Check out the download count! What the hell?
@RailfanEthan Brewster Buffalo sez "Hi"
You should probably mention somewhere in here that the generational terminology only applies to jet-fighters, that way those unfamiliar will know.
@BagelPlane Go right ahead, and good luck to you

+1@DarthAbhinav You did a good job here, not only does the plane look great but she's also believable. She fits the historical context very well.

The prettiest little fighter America ever built
@TheOldGadget That's reason alone to go with Ford. Porche's tanks were failures, whereas Ford built one aircraft per hour every single hour of WW2.

Kid, life ain't gonna get any easier.

You're welcome.
@GlargiBoo Nah, German is fine. Maybe do a West German Phantom, or Saber, or try building an East German Mig-21.
You should try making something besides nazi aircraft.
BWAHAHAHA!
+1Hail to the king
+2Awwww yeah!

Good things get downloads.

@brians1209 As I mentioned before, my most recent upload features missiles that work exactly as I've described. You can control them.
+1Download planes you like from builders you admire. RIP the planes apart! Tear out their secrets! Learn their methods!

Is that a specific WW2 carrier or something from your imagination?
Heheheh
