VN-A304 is a Boeing 707-344 and is also the first Boeing aircraft of Vietnam. This aircraft was previously owned by Air Vietnam (the airline of the Republic of Vietnam government), but after the Vietnam War ended, this aircraft flew to Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong and was retained by Pan American World Airways. Around 1977, when the American Pan Am airline asked to fly back to the A1 route across Vietnam, Vietnam had the opportunity to take back the rare B707s that Pan Am had seized. Finally, the aircraft was delivered by an American pilot at Gia Lam airport. After that, pilot Huynh Minh Bon (one of the most experienced pilots in Vietnam) became the captain of the B707, carrying out North-South, military transport, and international flights. This was a period when the US embargo was very strict, Pan Am had to "dodge and go underground" to exchange this B707. And this plane was "cut up" for scrap sale in 2015.
@MissBloomie Edit: VT-EFO (the crashed 747) had a damaged engine on board and was scheduled to be delivered to Boeing for repair. In the Air crash investigation simulation of Flight 182, there is a detail of "engine number 5", which was the damaged engine and the plane leased by Air Canada to have the engine installed after another 747 of the airline had an engine failure. That engine was inspected after the lease and declared usable by Air Canada staff.
@MissBloomie The 747 has only four engines. The fifth engine has a cowling to improve aerodynamics. The fifth engine is the damaged engine that is being brought back to base for repair. Boeing designed the 747 to be able to do this. They call it "podding." source
