Unobtanium was anew material that they had recently discovered and it was not entirely crucial to starships as they where still able to fly to Pandora and presumably back
@MaliciousMuffin They went to mine unobtanium, which was a crucial resource in building starships, which humanity needed to evacuate earth's population, since it was overcrowded and faced global starvation

it was, until the release of endgame (iirc) the highest grossing movie of all time. its long, but definitely give it a watch!
