The SPW is back this week with a stunning interview, some more bad aviation news, and some intriguing builds.

1460 days of SimplePlanes:

That’s right, SimplePlanes.com is now 4 years old. This has been the case for a week or so, but RailfanEthan pointed it out in his post. We’re now just one year away from SimplePlanes’s first mentionable milestone: five years of having an active community.

2:

There he goes, there he goes again:

Wait, roleplays are still a thing? That’s right, Strikefighter04, former President of a certain RP nation has rebuilt his government into The New Republic of SimpleLandia. Spoiler alert: just as the name suggests it’s identical to the old Republic. With his super-orginal name, he now attempts to reclaim his former position as leader of the foremost RP nation. But let’s be honest with each other: the collapse of SL proved that roleplays are fragile. No matter how hard you work on making them great, they’ll collapse at the twitch of an eye. I for one will have no part in this new nation, but I don’t discourage others from getting entangled in the adventure that is New SimpleLandia.

Bad news for aviation... again!

Last week we had a terrible crash of a Cessna plane that had 5 people on board. This week, a Seattle airport maintenance worker stole a Bombardier Q400. After flying rogue for 25 miles, he crashed into an island, killing him and destroying his plane instantly. Thankfully, the turboprop plane was empty besides for the hijacker. Although it is a tragedy that this man died, it could have been much worse.

SimpleRockets:

It’s mysteriously quiet around SimpleRockets2.com, as the deadline for an end-of-summer release date closes in on the hard-working dev-team.

Teasers and other posts:

Here are some notable promos/interesting forums from the past week:
Clickbait has gone too far..., by Fjorge: A clickbait YouTuber has used a SimplePlanes.com upload as proof for a “new Chinese guided-missile destroyer.” Sorry for making you loose faith in humanity. :(
Is it just me or does this place kinda look like wright airport?, by iLikeiPads: Eh, sort of?
Tales from the Concern Box: Vol. II, by yours truly: Good lord man, did you just spotlight your own post? Yes, yes I did, because it’s really great.

Interview with BaconAircraft:

Q: For those who aren’t familiar with your work, tell us a bit about your SimplePlanes career. What do you think is your strong quite as far as building goes?
Most of you are quite familiar with what I do on this site, but for those who aren't aware, I have an absurd obsession for bacon - hence the username BaconAircraft. I mostly build overly detailed, high-part designs, including unique features such as interiors, functional cockpits, paneled fuselage, realistic aerofoils, lots of moving parts and most importantly, I’m very good getting complaints from mobile users in the comment section. The vast majority of my designs are greatly inspired from existing aircraft, and comes with all the bells and whistles you’d expect a real plane to have, plus some extra silly features that makes the design unique. As far as specific specialties goes, I’d say I’m quite good at paneling, and (not to be cocky) one of the first few people on the site to “master” it. For those who don’t know what paneling is, it is simply a technique used by most airliner makers; in one case, consists of multiple fuselage pieces with the outside edges set to “circular”, rotated to make customizable hollow cross sections that otherwise cannot be achieved by using single fuselage pieces, or in other cases, this technique can also be used to make realistic aerofoils.
.
Q: You’re a member of MasterChat and TSAD, the two biggest chat groups on SimplePlanes. What’s your advice on how to collaborate effectively? What are the biggest things to avoid when when working with someone else?
I feel like a decent amount of people on this site (when it comes to collaborations) often neglect planning and the splitting of tasks, which in most cases lacks efficiency and doesn’t take advantage of each collaborator’s specialty. The majority of collaboration projects that I’ve been apart of, either TSAD or SPMC has the task planned and split from the beginning. For example, I mostly collaborate with the SPMC member MrSilverwolf, and often than not, we will split the project’s workload up based on what each of us excells at. I would most likely do the aerofoils, control surfaces, landing gear and mechanical bits, while wolf has a better understanding other, such as the airframe, instruments, flight behavior, livery and etcetera. This way, we can each do one bit at a time, combine, reassess and repeat - getting stuff done easily and quickly in a manner that suits both our specialties, and provides us with a quality design. From my experience, the most important aspect of collaboration that one should avoid is sugarcoating their thoughts. To be specific, if you think something’s not right, or doesn't look good, tell them in a nice way right away, or don’t be scared to fix it yourself. In most cases the people you’re collaborating with won’t mind, and will appreciate it.
.
Q: A lot of people demand that you hurry up and release the planes you have in development. No doubt that onslaught of impatient users is stressful. What would you say to those people?
The short answer is: “I have a life too, you know.”
While the long answer: not only have I got less free time to design stuff due to the pressure of schoolwork and university prep, I have quite high standards for my designs. Most of my projects that I was planning on releasing either never got finished, or by the time it was finished, I have improved or the game has changed so much that the project became obsolete. That’s the main reason why nobody has seen that 737-400 Combi, A340-600F, Tu-144, Mi-26, Subaru WRX etc. that I teased on the forum. If anyone is desperately wanting to fly them, visit my discord channel and shoot a message to me. I will not hesitate to send you unlisted link.
.
Q: What is the most important lesson you’ve had to learn in your time on SP Forums? Was it easy or hard to learn?
Moral lesson wise, I’d say for sure that you should always do something that you enjoy, and not for the reward that comes with it. In this case, I design stuff on here because I enjoy the process of building, tweaking, testing, and the occasional failure (hence why I take forever) and not the fake internet points and “fame” I get as “reward”.
Lesson building/designing wise, I’d say paneling is hands down the most important. With a bit of mathematics and trial and error, paneling is not hard to learn, but extremely useful due to its capability of creating shapes that are otherwise not doable by normal adjustable fuselage pieces. Just remember that practise makes perfect.
.
Thanks again to Bacon for letting me interview him here on the SPW!

USER SHOUTOUT:

please don’t tag this user in the comments: that’s really tacky!

RodWan

This guy has a cool mustache and even cooler planes. Definitely worth a look.

That’s all for this week’s news. Have a safe and enjoyable rest of your day/night.

@Awsomur someone should make a crashed q400 as a memorial. Or maybe not.

The death of the hijacker is really sad, apparently he did a few battle rolls, loopy loops, he seemed to have no bad intentions, it’s just good he didn’t crash in residential areas. It’s a really sad story.

I don't like anyone to tag them because I don't want them to go on asking about how they were featured on the SPW. Plus the spotlight might make them feel uncomfortable.
