5TH GEN - 4++ GEN CHALLENGE

5,598 RedFalcon  6.9 years ago

For those who are interested I have decided to host a competition out of sheer curiosity. The challenge is as thus; construct an aircraft with an air frame relating to real life 4++ Gen or 5th Gen aircraft.

- The aircraft must have the capability of both air to air and air to ground missions. Bonus points for both capabilities in the same mission.

- If the aircraft is of 5th Gen type, the air frames weapons must be either hidden in an internal bay or in a place were they would be hidden. (check the 5th gen on the left for example).

- The aircraft should have a wide variety of capabilities other than mission critical equipment. (eg. V/STOL, Carrier capability, etc).

- The aircraft should be around the same in terms of maneuvering as the two examples in the picture. (wing loading = ~30lbs/ft2, Thrust/Weight = 2 - 3.5).

Other than this, All is up to the creator. Let your imaginations run wild!!

For those who need inspiration, research the following planes:
- F/A-18E/F
- F-22
- F-35
- Euro fighter Typhoon
- Dassault Rafale
- Saab JAS 39
- Su-35
- T-50 PAK-FA
- J-20
- J-17

I'm in. I'm still trying to make a proper weapons bay on my plane.

@RedFalcon of course, creativity will be much more fun to be made, but you category this challenge for 5th gen plane, well, I think you have to limit it to make it more authentic (and challenging, mwehehehhehehe) and please limit the parts, sometimes they abuse it

@RAF1, Good choice! @phanps, only one will be scored against but feel free to share your creativity while you've got the chance!

@ShatSlanger, Not necessarily but it would be preferable if it could operate on as many devices as possible.

You may be correct in some ways @MASB29 but the physics in simple planes engineering do not quite work the same as they do in real life. Due to the fixed thrust that is produced by the engines in SP and the values of lift produced by the wings (Especially as they change with different aerofoil designs) The values are amplified in simple planes. An F-22 replica in SP should be more maneuverable than in real life. However if you can make an aircraft maneuverable with those sorts of stats (with thrust vectoring or relaxed static stability) than it still has more of a chance to be recognized in this challenge. It's more for fun and creativity anyways.

Thrust-to-weigh ratio of F-22, > 1.09 (1.26 with loaded weight and 50% fuel), it's a bit un realistic to make it to 3, I think it is the best that 2 is the limit, F-22's wing loading is 77.216 pounds / square foot, more than twice of your requirement, I think it is the best that 90 is the limit (3x your requirement)

Just a reminder for all challengers that the submissions should be successors of this challenge plane. Do this by simply removing the cockpit from the 5th Gen (the one on the left), making it a sub assembly then placing it on your project. Or you could just delete the air frame around the cockpit and build around the cockpit. Good luck everyone!
