Petition to limit users to ONE FORUM POST PER DAY

18.6k F104Deathtrap  5.7 years ago

As it stands, spam-builders are limited to 3 uploads per day. This prevents abuse and gives people more of an opportunity to see new creations before they're buried by the sands of time.

I recommend we make a similar limit to forum posts.

Over the years and especially in the last few weeks, we have been subjected to innumerable posts from a very vocal and frustrating minority of users. Not only is the volume of essentially useless posts annoying, but it steers people away from helping one another and enjoying the game itself.

Please, comment below. Let me hear your thoughts.

You see, that makes you somewhat hypocritical. I saw you commenting on a user's (@WiiWIiTheMini's) post saying he makes too many forums, and then I see this. :|

Well we're already limited to like 4 or 5. And I think 1 per day is too low.

@F104Deathtrap yes I too am frustrated with the forums...they’re meant to allow discussion on builds or airplanes and airplane related topics, but instead have devolved into a collection of crap, feelings and “I’m leaving or I’m back” posts. Sad.

@ChiChiWerx Nah, I just thought it would be satisfying to discuss. We aren't always permitted to voice our displeasure with other peoples posts and this seemed like a productive way to blow off some steam.

Of course it’s all academic and not up to us to decide.

@F104Deathtrap sure. That way people have to think before they post, otherwise they lose their opportunity; at the same time it doesn’t stink of censorship.

@ChiChiWerx How about a cooldown of a couple hours?

A limit is fine, but 3 is a better limit than 1, IMHO. If it’s limited too much, it’ll have the opposite effect than intended, that is, to kill the forum traffic.

@PhantomBladeCorp I'm not prepared for a literary debate regarding the methods of constructing a decent analogy. But your line of reasoning is sound, in my opinion. I think a cooldown timer of an hour or two could help.

@F104Deathtrap So I understand an analogy with an overly complex process that takes place in the n-th dimension of this world would have better suited your suggestion? I don't think so.
Then again, I would support a cooldown for posting stuff. But I sure wouldn't support limiting the amount. If I were to spam forum posts for points, it wouldn't be too practical. Two points per upvote would require a couple hundred to really gain some substantial amount of points.

@PhantomBladeCorp Thank you for your further participation in the ongoing discussion! While a two letter response was more than enough, your robust explanation gives all of us a better glimpse into your processes and motivations.
I must point out that it is possible to have common sense and disagree with you at the same time, however impossible that may seem to you. For instance, common sense reveals that your insultingly simplistic analogy regarding thoughtcrime has little bearing in reality (how could one quantify thought, much less prevent it from occurring?). This becomes excessively glaring when considering that people can continue to make comments, private posts and up to 3 uploads per day.

However, the gist of your argument is pristinely clear. Limiting posts to once per day would be unreasonablly draconian. And on that point you may be correct.

    And keep down the spam

I disagree solely because most people post builds more than forum posts and dedicated forum readers will notice that there are not a lot of posting. (In my opinion of course)

Since you asked me to expand on my "no" yesterday. I didn't do it right away since people with common sense and a bit of experience around here can tell why this suggestion is straight up bad. But it seems I have to dissect my own reasons. Don't expect much different from what was already said.
First off, to limit ones amount of forum posts per day to a mere single post is extremely strict. This is exactly like limiting the amount of thoughts you can have in a single day. How would that feel to ya? Sure wouldn't be awesome. "But I can think of something really really important and problem solved." Just no. To think of something very important, you must first think about what to think of so there goes your one and only thought.
Maybe I wanna post a tutorial about how to make realistic fuselage wings and later that day I also wanna update my roleplay related to Vietnam War and how the Vietnamese have just stolen some American planes from the South and it's actually more of a teaser for a plane I will upload in the near future. My point is: within a day, you might wanna write more than two forum posts about totally different topics.
And so, your one forum post per day or literally any X posts per day limit is absurd. Honestly.
What I would propose is a cooldown between both uploading builds and writing forum posts. One minute at most. This should prevent effective spam but, to be honest, it's been well over a year or so when I last saw someone spamming forum posts. Although I think something along the lines of that did happen recently but it was no big deal. The moderators swiftly cleaned up the forums and the spammers got tempbanned. They did a great job at solving the problem.
Without further ado, I think I've made myself very clear and I don't think there's anyone that doesn't understand what I said.

@Tully2001 I do not want to see less participation. It's important to make the place welcome. But I think it will encourage better posting. People will have to consider "Is this worth mentioning?" before they punch the button.

One seems a little too tight. And besides, I’ve checked the forums and it doesn’t seem too bad atm. If it does get bad, probably 3 posts per day will suffice.
