Why The 797 Will Fail to Replace The 737

101k Wallaby  6.1 years ago

As you all know, Boeing is in the process of delivering their 737 MAX-8 and have recently delivered their first 737 MAX-9. Boeing also announced their new composite NMA (New Midmarket Aircraft), which should later be re-named the 797. The new Boeing 797 is intended to be delivered in 2025 (possibly to Delta Airlines) as a replacement to the Boeing 737. However, most airlines may not use the 797 for it's intended purchase.

Boeing has attempted to replace the 727 and the 737 before with the introduction of the 757, the new mid-size airliner. The 757-300 is the longest single-isle aircraft ever produced. The funny thing is though, the 737 outlived the 757, and a few airlines still have passenger 727 aircraft flying. Attempt one failed, airlines want the 737 more than even it's successor, and most airlines are planning on replacing their 757s with the new 797 instead of the 737. Why? Because the 797 better fits a gap that currently only the 757 is filling. However, the 757 is not entirely adequate for the job. Airlines still need a longer range plane, which is why the 797 replaces the 757 instead of the 737.

The 737-MAX has all of the capabilities that the 797 could potentially have, including similar range, and similar fuel burn. The 737 holds less passengers making the 737 vital for long-and-skinny routes.

One airline that could still replace the 737 with the 797...

Norwegian Air: Currently operates 737s and 787s. They use the 737 MAX 8 for short and skinny routes, but that can be better filled by the 797, which has raked wingtips from the 787 to provide for longer flights. Despite the 797 being larger and holding more, I's still not 787 large, meaning Norwegian can still use it on it's short and skinny flights to fulfill the demand without losing money. Also, the capabilities of the 797 could be better for the routes as well.

Tell me what you think!

Ayy, OpenTTD is okay by itself, but the mod (are they considered mods?) support make it a lot better. My problem is that I have too many NewGRFs installed so my train list is like 10 miles long. @DerekSP

I'm sure crew familiarity and parts supply also plays into it.

@InternationalAircraftCompany OpenTTD. I have played the original too, but I found myself in love with the NewGRF support of OTTD (hence the A380 I was talking about, from WAS mod)

Are you talking about the original or OpenTTD? @DerekSP

@InternationalAircraftCompany both lol. I play mobile while on the bus/train and then just transfer the save to my PC and continue, but lately I have not been playing it a lot, because my save is now super end game and I am too lazy to start again

@jamesPLANESii oh I was researching the naming scheme, and the possible names after the 797 are:
    1707, 1717, 1727, ...
    807, 817, 827, ...
    7A7, 7B7, 7C7, ...

AFAIK the 797 is intended to be used together with the 737, hence the term "MOM" (middle of market). The 797 is basically a beefed up 737, it will have longer range than the 737, it will carry more people than the 737, but it will not cross into the market of the 777/787/A330.
Currently there is a high demand for long-haul, (relatively) low-capacity direct routes between non-hub airports.
Coincidentally, I have already made a basic chart visualizing the capacity/range ratio based on real values, and you can clearly see the blank gap in the middle, with B797 nicely placed in there.
It would also make no sense for Boeing to be developing a new aircraft intended to replace their bestseller that is still being actively ordered in large quantities.
Of course, some planes will get replaced, but only in those cases where the airline is forced to used a plane that is much larger than what is required, which is a good thing for airlines because they can take their 777s/787s/A330s from routes with low load factor and use them somewhere where they will be much more profitable.
Also, it will be a great plane for Transport Tycoon that I will surely use to connect those pesky towns that are too small to fill my A380s >:C

Unless Boeing predicted that they’re gonna go bankrupt by 2030. XD

BTW what do you think they’re gonna call their next airliner after the 797? The 7107 (which looks weird XD)? Lol.

I think the 797 would replace the long range routes that are currently being done by the 737, and it would replace the short range routes that the 737s are just a little small for. That’s what I think. It could be more economical for airlines because it holds more passengers but uses up about the same amount of fuel as the 737.

@QingyuZhou I’ve never really liked the 757. Just an average plane for me

They just need to replace the 757 engine’s to a miniature ge9x or make a 757 MAX

As I have heard, the 747 and 777 are the most popular

If the 797 is single aisle as well, then it probably won't be any more popular than the MAX10
