The failsafe on one of the Mk 39 mod 2 bombs failed as the B52 crashed in the empty field, detonating itself, and the second warhead in the plane.

The area was glassed by the duo warhead explosions, and radioactive fallout littered the skies and ground for miles around. Unfavorable winds blew a majority of fallout north, towards Philadelphia, Washington DC, and New York. Them, and all the smaller cities surrounding them were turned into nuclear wastelands, inhabited by mutated animals and empty ruins. Cities south of New York were evacuated, and following it was mass panic.

Much of the international community believed the destruction of several of the US' major cities was a "just reward" after the liberal usage of nuclear weapons on Korea and China nearly a decade ago.
Despite the immense public outcry from the US' citizens, the military kept their nuclear arsenal, and several years later built nuclear launch sites in Italy and Turkey in total secrecy.
With the Soviet discovery of the nuclear weapons aimed at them so close, the retaliation was to send nuclear missiles to a new ally; Cuba...
