The Spruce Goose was actually not made of any spruce wood, the name "Spruce Goose" stuck because it was basically a joke made by a bunch of jerks that wanted to trigger Hughes. Funny enough, it worked, and the name stuck unfortunately. The plane was made using birch wood.
