    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (4/5):

The ship looks excellent, perfectly captures the essence of a pre-dread (it seems to be heavily based on the Indiana-class battleships, with a few creative liberties taken here and there)
The only things I had problem with was the very slow speeding up and the barren decks with close to no details. But other than these, I liked it.

    - Design/Accuracy (12/15):

As mentioned above, the ship seems to be based on the Indiana-class but with some changes here and there. Overall, it's design is good, very authentic.
The thing I think was kind of over the top was the multiple propellers on one shaft. While the technology itself did exist around the time, I couldn't find any examples of this being fitted on a pre-dreadnought battleship, tho I also understand that the ship is based on an anime where technology gets mixed up a bit (if the uploader can provide an example I'm willing to give an extra point)
The base of the main turrets being painted the same color as the deck was also a bit unusual, it would have been better if they were painted in the steel color of the ship.
The anchor is also too large. The portholes also seem to be a bit too big.

    - Details (10/15):

The ship features some pretty nice details such as modeled anchor chains, railings and rigging as well as a pretty neatly made flag.
I also liked the addition of torpedo netting poles on the sides and the tumblehome hull as well.
The decks however are scarcely detailed, there are a few skylights and some lifeboats but other than those, nothing else. The flag also seems to be floating in midair, either because the builder forgot to move it in place or because they forgot to add a rigging line there.

    - Features (12/20):

The vessel has all usable main, secondary and tertiary battery which are controlled by a neat system of AGs that allows you to train them either to port or starboard which I think was a clever solution without having to use a complicated FT system.
However, there were no torpedo tubes, nor was there any extra features such as a bridge interior. Steering is also solved using a gyro instead of an actual rudder, whereas the rudder while being modeled, doesn't turn.

    - Build Quality (6/10):

The builder used a few part saving solutions and overall managed to achieve a very good and low part count.
Unfortunately, I noticed some mistakes such as the main mast's rigging going through the stern and coming out below. It was also a bit strange that the builder solved flotation with very small buoyancy blocks outside of the ship, rather then hiding them inside the hull along the edge.
The bow bulge also doesnt smoothly flow into the hull.

    - Performance (14/20):

The ship's gaining of speed is very very slow, I understand that it was meant ot be realistic, but I feel like it's not the most fun like this, a good middle ground would have been better. The steering is good tho.
The guns have realistic reload as well, the main guns take ages to reload of which I'm once again not the fan of but I understand they were meant to be realistic. Their rotation was also realistically slow but they were okay.
The AGs to train the guns to one side or the other was rather well usable, however, the lack of any aiming system makes long range gunnery difficult. The ship needs some time to settle on the ocean mod but after that, it handles the waves fairly okay.

    - Description and Information (12/15):

The description was pretty okay, it contained all the necessary information and featured some nice images such as a propaganda poster. I also liked that the creator used a black and white edited photo on the thumbnail which was a nice detail.
I did feel the description to be a bit too short, some more screenshots would have made it much better in my opinion.

  • USS Oregon (BB-3) 1.6 years ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (4/5):

While the ship is a bit barebones, given that it comes from someone who is relatively new in the community I found this ship to be rather impressive. The handling of the ship was great and it had some rather great solutions for the weapons and some details.

    - Design/Accuracy (14/15):

The build is replica of the US Battleship Oregon (BB-3) and it does a good job at replicating the overall look of the ship. The only negative I found is the lack of some major details like the tertiary guns but I understand the ship was built on mobile so it's acceptable.

    - Details (7/15):

The ship is rather scarcely detailed with basically only the major component being present and nothing beyond that. Again, I understand that it was built on mobile and so the builder had to stay below a limit so Im taking that into consideration with the score.

    - Features (10/20):

The vessel only has the main and secondary cannons usable, with the forward and main guns as well as the port and starboard secondaries being separated into 4 groups. No other armament is present like the tertiary guns or the torpedo tubes.
For propulsion and steering, there are custom built propellers and a functional rudder installed which where great to see, one thing I noticed however is that the propellers are spinning in the wrong direction than they should in order to push the ship forward or backward.

    - Build Quality (8/10):

Despite being rather low detail, what is present on the ship is well made, inclduding the FT based gun controls or the custom propellers and rudder.
One very interesting thing I noticed is that there are what appear to be hitboxes inside the hull, each providing some amount of buoyancy. I'm assuming this ship was meant to have a functional damage model which in the end didnt work out well (I tested two of them against each other but the enemy ship just blew up from one secondary shell) for actual naval battles which I think would have been fantastic.
The use of tire smoke for adding smoke on the funnels was also rather ingenious, I really liked it.
The hull is also very well built with even sliced hollow fuselages being used for the concave part at the bottom of the stern, between the propellers.
Apart from these, the builder tried their best to be as part saving as possible and used some creative solutions to get the msot detail out of the limited part count.

    - Performance (12/20):

The ship bounces a little on the ocean mod but once it settles, it handles well on it. Speed and steering are okay, albeit speeding up a bit slow.
The guns are rather easily usable, tho they might be a bit too fast to traverse and they are also lacking an aiming system other than the game's predictor.

    - Description and Information (10/15):

The description is a bit barebones with there being only one screenshot that is inaccessible. All the necessary information is there but with a few working screenshots, I think it would have looked better.

  • HMS Agamemnon (1908) 1.6 years ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (4/5):

The ship looks beautiful and nicely detailed, although I did notice a few small issues. The controls also had a few problems.

    - Design/Accuracy (14/15):

I didn't find any notable inaccuracies compared to the real ship, except for the lack of lifeboats.

    - Details (10/15):

The ship is very well detailed and some parts show a lot of effort. However, others show a bit less: The anchors are just slapped on the side of the ship without properly aligning them with the hawsepipes.
There is a clear emphasis on the ship's weapons with them being the most detailed. Unfortunately, due to too many parts being wasted on them, the ship lacks in other department, for example it only has two motor launches for her lifeboat complement.
There are also no chains for the anchors. The full rigging with the cables sagging however looks very good, I liked it a lot (even if it makes no sense for example on the cargo booms, since those cables are holding them from falling down)
The flags were also very well made and make the ship look much better.

    - Features (10/20):

The build features usable main and secondary guns. These have a function called Turret Deviation/Dispersion which was a really cool idea and I liked it.
Sadly, those very well detailed tertiary guns are all static which is unfortunate.
The ship uses rudder based steering but it's not very well made and is painfully slow to turn. The propellers are just cosmetic and dont actually provide the propulsion.

    - Build Quality (5/10):

I feel like the builder focused their efforts on the wrong parts of the ship: things like lifeboat davits were made to have a perfect curvature using dozens of segments, but there were no parts left to make the actual lifeboats themselves.
There are no anchor chains (not even in a simple form like adding a single fuselage to represent them) and the anchors themselves were just quickly slapped on the side, whereas things like the cargo booms are very highly detailed.
The quality just seems inconsistent, somewhere it's very well built, elsewhere it feels like the builder just wanted to get it over with.
I also didn't like the fact that the builder received help from another participant

    - Performance (10/20):

The ship is just unusably slow at turning. Forward speed is good and is capped out at the max speed of the real ship which in great, but I missed the ability to go reverse.
It didn't ride over the waves of the Ocean mod too smoothly but it was not too problematic.
The camera aim for the guns was great, minus one problem with the aft main turret: after one full rotation with the camera, it de-syncs from the rest of the guns until I rotate all the way back. Their traverse speed was good, not too slow, not too fast.

    - Description and Information (9/15):

The description lacks any screenshots or photos and feels a bit too short and barebones.

  • Pre-Dreadnought Challenge 1.6 years ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (4/5):

On first look the ship has a very unique and atypical design. Things like the detailed lifeboats or the fact that the ship lands smoothly on the ocean mod were welcome surprises.
Despite including a controls section in the description it was lacking some information that I had to figure out on my own.

    - Design/Accuracy (8/15):

The ship's design shows a small resemblance to the French battleship Masséna, mostly on the hull shape but other details showed some resemblance as well.
However, the bridge's design kind of stood out to me in a negative way, a big blocky bridge like this would hardly be found on warships of the era.
I also couldn't find any real life examples of 4 screw pre-dreadnoughts but I found some with 3 screws so I'm willing to accept this as reasonable.

    - Details (7/15):

The build includes many neat small details like the oars in the lifeboats, ladders on the hull and superstrucure or pipes running up on the smokestacks. There is also some very minimal rigging added as well as a few doors and windows.
The wooden deck even has panel lines to spearate the indiviudal planks which was very nice too.
Unfortunatley, other than these, the ship lacks any other kind of details like anchors, bollards etc.

    - Features (10/20):

The vessel features both the main and secondary cannons to be usable but has no other weaponry other than those (some tertiary cannons or torpedo tubes would have made it better)
Ther is also a barebones bridge interior with a helm and two EOTs but they dont have much detail on them.

    - Build Quality (3/10):

I couldn't really find any clever part usage or part saving solutions, in fact in some places the builder is even a bit wasteful with parts. (there were only 1-2 cases where I found fuselage slicing used to save on parts)
The use of vertical fuselages for the hull shape was not bad, I liked it.
The forward turret can only be traversed by activating AG2 instead of AG1 (which is listed as the AG of it) which leads me to believe the builder did not properly check this before uploading.
I didn't really like the fact that the builder didnt bother to change the color of the cockpit and the pilot parts and just left them as pink.

    - Performance (12/20):

The ship is easy to control and the weapons are easy to use. The turrets turn a tiny bit too slow for my taste but they are sort of realistic so it's fine. The ship's speed however is way too much, I couldn't find a single example of a pre-dreadnought battleship doing 26 knots (the use of a speed limiter however was very good)
The ship despite having custom built propellers, still seem to use jet engines for propulsion, while the steering is solved with gyroscopes only, there isn't even a decorative rudder.
I liked the fact how well the vessel lands on the ocean mod, close to no bouncing at all.

    - Description and Information (4/15):

The description is rather barebones with only a controls section inlcuded (and even that is missing some key information such as the function of VTOL and Trim) as well as some small notes.
Adding more content like screenshots and a history section would have made it much better. It would have also been better if the post's title was the ship's name instead of the challenge's name.

  • JIN Mikasa 1910 (Japanese Pre-Dreadnought battleship) 1.6 years ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (3/5):

The ship's look give nice first impression for a mobile build, it's a solid build from someone who is relatively new on the website and new to shipbuilding.
I also liked the fact that it settled on the ocean mod and handled well on it, which I'm assuming was probably not intentional but it was great.
The really high max speed and the secondaries blowing up the ship was not too good tho

    - Design/Accuracy (9/15):

The build represents the original ship mostly accurately, although there are some very noticeable inaccuracies and missing features on the superstructure. The inclusion of AA guns was also anachronistic.

    - Details (9/15):

The build features mostly minimal detail (I understand that the builder is on mobile, I'm taking that into account) tho the inclusion of some railings and some rigging was nice. The funnels also have visible seams and even some pipes which I really liked.
I also noticed what I assume to be booms for the torpedo netting, a nice little detail.

    - Features (9/20):

The ship has usable main, secondary and tertiary guns (the latter two being combined into one). The secondaries can only be traversed and can't be elevated.
It also features the mentioned anachronistic AA guns that can't be traversed or elevated, they just fire at a fixed direction.
Steering is solved with a wing giving the build an actual rudder-like steering system which I appreciated. Propulsion is solved with jet engines while there are some decorative-only vanilla props for the propellers.
The little cameras around the superstructure were rather nice, tho I didn't see much reason for adding cameras to the secondaries as well.

    - Build Quality (4/10):

The hull looks a bit janky here and there and the builder completely forgot to use smoothing on it which would have made it look a lot better. The brown deck piece is even visible through the bottom of the stern even though this could have been easily solved with silcinig if not anything else.
The only creative part saving solutions I could find was the use of vanilla props for the propeller as decoration but they use Scimitar blade style, probably the worst possible style to be used for an old ship's propeller.

    - Performance (8/20):

When Throttle is set to max, the ship is just way too fast, there is no system to control the max speed. There is also no way to reverse the ship. The rudder-like steering was very good although it only functions well when the ship is at the unrealistic max speed, and works a bit too slow when the ship is at a realistic speed.
The turrets traverse a bit too fast imo. The secondary weapons' traverse is not connected to their AG so they can be moved even if AG3 is off. There is also no way to fire only one side of the secondaries and just slightly traversing them and then firing always blows up the ship so they are close to unusable.
The aft main cannons both have very low firing delay which makes them fire like a machine gun when not used together with the forward cannons, whereas the forward cannons both have higher delay.
The AA guns just can't be elevated or traversed at all.
The ship handles well on the ocean mod which was appreciated. I also liked it that the main guns have different elevation speeds, a nice feature.

    - Description and Information (5/15):

The description features a long copied section from the ship's wikipedia and some details about the armour of the real life ship (which I think is not really necessary because the build itself features no actual armour damage model, but I'm accepting it as part of the creator's personal style choice to include).
I think including some screenshots and maybe the controls would have made it much better because it feels a bit lazily but together like this.

  • Sp-Repmayin 1938 refit 1.6 years ago

    Official evaluation

    - First Impression (1/5):

The ship doesn't really resemble a pre-dreadnought at all. The superstructure and funnels look way too modern even for a 1938 refit and the shape of the hull with the completely flat aft end looks more like a 21st century vessel than one from the late-1800s/early-1900s
The forward and amidships turrets just didn't traverse at all.
There was also no controls included anywhere, not in the craft instructions or in the description.

    - Design/Accuracy (2/15):

As said before, the superstructure looks way too modern even for a refit. The hull looks nothing like a pre-dreadnought hull.
The description mentions the cannons being 16 inch which was possible because the ship was for some reason built much larger. I couldn't find anything even close to this in real life where a pre-dreadnought would be refitted with 16 inch guns and 6 of them no less, making it way too far fetched even for a fictional ship.
The only accurate part about this build is the fact that it has 3 centerline twin main turrets, something which there is real life examples of (the Brandenburg-class for example). The bridge tower mast also seems to somewhat resemble a ww2 stlye mast like that of the US fast battleships, but it's really on the edge.
The ship's top speed seem to also be accurate to that of a pre-dreadnought

    - Details (2/15):

The ship has barely any details to speak of, it's completely minimalistic. The only thing I could think of being some form of extra detail is the circular shapes randomly placed around the deck, but I couldn't figure out their purpose (hatches maybe?)
There are also some radio antennas on the mast tho they are looking way more futuristic even for a ww2-refit.

    - Features (3/20):

The ship has main and secondary guns, although only the aftmost main turret can be rotated, all other weapons are fixed in place.
Propulsion is solved with jet engines and steering with a gyro, not very great.

    - Build Quality (2/10):

The forward and aft turrets can't be moved because they have a accidental attachments to the hull. This leads me to believe that the builder didn't even bother to do a final round of testing before uploading
There are no part saving solutions anywhere and the hull is not very well built, especially the blacked aft end, caused by making fuselages too short.
The builder also used someone else's turrets on the ship, but at least they gave credit in the description.

    - Performance (5/20):

The top speed of the ship is realistic and good, steering speed is okay as well.
The guns are pretty much useless because they can't be traversed.
It was an unexpected but welcome surprise that the ship settles nicely on the ocean mod and then sails very smoothly on it, no bouncing around.

    - Description and Information (5/15):

The description only includes a short history section and a list of the weaponry, nothing else. Including the controls and some screenshots would have made it better, as well as adding some formatting to the otherwise short and dry text.

I immediately recognized my own pre-dreadnought hull being used here, which on its own, wouldn't have been a problem, but (at the time of the writing of this comment) the uploader did not give credit anywhere, thus making it build theft, a serious offense in my eyes.

Unfortunately, the build looks nothing like a pre-dreadnought, the creator probably didn't even take a few minutes to read the part of my post where I presented the general design of pre-dreadnoughts.
While the builder specified that they are not good at building ships, during my evaluation I concluded that they didn't try much.
The build shows a clear lack of effort, further reinforced by the almost empty description, therefore I shall take no effort to evaluate it. Disqualified.
