USS Long Beach (CGN-9) (1980 Refit)

Multi-Purpose Missile Cruiser

The genesis of nuclear powered sea vessels would come as the USS Nautilus submarine broke records with its performance. Given how well it worked in a submarine, with a nearly unlimited amount of power at the vessel's disposal, it wasn't too long before a surface vessel received the new form of propulsion.

That vessel would be the USS Long Beach, a new form of guided missile cruiser built with the C1W reactor built specifically for it. It was the last cruiser built in the classic hull style of WW2 cruisers, with later classes built as scaled up destroyer hulls. Alongside her new reactor she was built with the SCANFAR system, a new phased radar array in which she served as the testing platform.

Built as an all missile cruiser, 5 inch guns would later be added per the orders of President Kennedy. Alongside the carrier USS Enterprise and fellow nuclear cruiser USS Bainbridge she would form the first all nuclear task force. She would eventually see service in the Vietnam war, proving formidable against the Vietnamese Air force downing 2 Migs and directing friendly aircraft toward downing several more.

In 1980 she rescued 114 Vietnamese boat people fleeing the country, before returning home for a refit. Her aging technology would be updated, with new RADAR and weapon systems added, including the Phalanx CIWS systems and Tomahawk cruise missiles. Until her decommissioning in 1995 she would be deployed several times providing air cover in Operation Nimble Archer, escorting the USS Missouri Battleship, providing support for Operation Provide Comfort, and Evacuating soldiers in Operation Fiery Vigil.

Another big boat released, functionally like a counterpart to my Kiev with its array of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine armament. Worked on this alongside the Alfa before slowing down my uploads. Got to work with a few simple Funky Trees here, which proved quite useful for the missiles and guns! Also got to utilize a new ballast based stability system using a heavy block instead of a gyro. Hope you all enjoy it, because I'm sticking with one (maybe two at max) main uploads per month.

Basic Controls

  • Throttle for Forward Propulsion
  • Yaw to Steer

Weaponry & Features

Mark 12 Deck guns.

Deck guns with full rotation via pitch and roll, using some simple Funky trees to allow for easy and highly precise shooting.
- AG1 to Activate
- Pitch and Roll to aim.

RIM-67 Standard Surface to Air Missiles

Two-Stage Surface to Air missiles, launched via detachable rocket before separating and homing on target. Best to pitch the launchers up decently high before every launch.
- AG3 to activate
- Pitch and Roll to aim the launchers
- Lock on and FireWeapon to launch.

RUR-5 ASROC Launcher

Anti-Submarine Rockets equipped with cannon nukes, FOLLOW DIRECTIONS EXACTLY WHEN USING!
- AG2 to Activate
- Switch to the warhead and use its trajectory line.
- Pitch and Roll till trajectory line is at target area
- Switch to RUR-5 ASROC, FireWeapon to Launch
- Switch back to the warhead, watch the trajectory line and wait till it disappears (indicating the warhead hitting the water)
- FireWeapon to Detonate Warhead.
NUKE WARNING: Do not detonate near you, or you'll risk lag, game crashes, and/or your craft's destruction.

Phalanx CIWS

Gatling gun turrets for shooting down missiles
- AG4 to activate
- Pitch and Roll to aim (mouse as joystick recommended)

Anti-Surface Cruise Missiles

Modified Cleavers and Infernos modded to the stats of the Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles respectively.
- AG5 for "Tomahawks", AG6 for "Harpoons", FireWeapon to launch.
- When using Harpoons, switch to the 'Right' or 'Left' missiles depending on where your target is, shooting at a target to your right with missiles aimed to the left will cause their homing to fail.

Active Sonar

Modified Wing Guns courtesy of NFIGMT, capable of illuminating submerged targets from miles away.
- AG7 to Activate
- FireGuns to use.
