The class was a warship designed during the Stalin era. This level of design was proposed in the late 1930s, but has never been commissioned. Originally planned to build 15 battleships of this class, it was scheduled to be completed in 1947, making it the main attack force of the Soviet Navy. But the slow pace of the design and the excessive trust placed in Nazi Germany led the Soviet Union to reconsider its overly optimistic plan. Its abolition made the Soviet Union one of the few post World War II military powers not to have built its own battleship.
