Infantry Tank Mk. III (Valentine Mk. IX) Mini project

31.3k Mostly  6.1 years ago

HISTORY:

The war in africa was raging, as Italy, Germany clashed with allied forces occupying the north african territories. While france and america had shermans, the british had the Cromwell tank as well a Cruiser tanks and heavy tanks such as the Crusader and Matilda. That’s what was being used at the time in africa.
The rickety and lightly armoured vehicles such as the Crusaders and Cromwells needed to be replaced, as they were no match for the onslaught of Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks, as well as the StuG, StuH, and Marder tank destroyers. Something needed to be done, and fast. Hence, the Infantry Tank Mk. III, AKA, the Valentine Mk.1. Armed with a QF 2-Pounder 40mm cannon, the tank proved worthy for battle, especially against the Panzer divisions.
The tank soon got gun upgrades to QF 6-Pounder (57mm) and QF 75mm cannons; as well as having the old AEC. A189 9.6 litre Petrol engine with new GMC 6004 Diesel engines. Due to the new battle environment, many of the valentine tanks were stripped of their gunner ports, due to it being a tank that would barely ever engage in close-combat/urban combat against enemy infantry. The little tank was able to survive the invasions of german and Italian forces, eventually squeezing them out of africa, and restoring peace to a land long untouched by war. After it’s campaign in Africa, it went on to fight in the push for berlin, and retired in 1963.

interesting that this tanks design had exterior fuel tanks like the russian T tanks youd think that would leave it vulnerable
