The A-9ST Liger (-ST stands for Suporte Terrestre - Ground Support) is the A-9 export variant for the Brazilian Air Force (Forca Aerea Brasileira-FAB) specially designed and equipped according to FAB requests. The aircraft has been designated as A-2T in FAB inventory. The main difference from the prototype A-9GS aircraft are:
- A more robust and stable main landing gear assembly
- Certification of use for Israeli-made SPICE-2000 E/O Guided Bomb
- Main wing redesign and addition of slats for better low speed handling
- Software updates of main navigation and attack sensor systems
- General structural upgrades on secondary systems
- New camo colors, according to FAB standards
The A-9ST/A-2T Liger is a dedicated, single-seat, single-engine, attack aircraft designed for CAS, RECCE and Precision Bombing all-weather, day-and-night operations. The production has been accelerated to full scale in order to meet the demands that have been issued by Brazilian and Indonesian Air Forces for 80 and 60 aircrafts accordingly. The main designing of the fuselage, the flight controls and the avionics systems have been carried out by HarpiaDS, the wings and engine inlets design and the air refueling probe system assigned to EMBRAER and IPTN provided the cockpit and the landing gear.
The aircraft possesses a low infrared (IR) signature and a reduced radar-equivalent cross-section to help prevent detection, while low vulnerability of structure and systems aid survivability and a compliment of integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM).
The A-9ST Liger is fitted with an underfuselage-mounted sensor package, which contains various sophisticated electro-optical vertical, oblique, and forward-facing cameras, for performing navigation, targeting and aerial reconnaissance. The flight system employs a GE Avionics flight control computer. Extensive electronic countermeasure (ECM) are fitted to protect the aircraft, include passive receiver antennas on the tailfin and two active jammer assemblies that are mounted on both outer wings’ leading edge of the aircraft.
Various munitions can be mounted on the one centerline, two underfuselage and six under-wing hardpoints, including bombs, missiles and rockets; payloads of up to 2,000 lb may be carried upon the centerline and the two innermost under-wing pylons, while the outer pylons can carry up to 1,000 lb. All four of the under-wing hardpoints are plumbed for drop tanks to extend the aircraft's range, and the aircraft is also fitted with a fixed aerial refueling probe. Wingtip rails are provided for infrared guided air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9X Sidewinder. The A-9ST is fitted with four 30 mm DEFA 620 revolver cannons. The aircraft is capable of carrying and firing new laser, INS and Joint Direct Attack Munition guided bombs and has an all-digital modern glass-cockpit display with advance targeting equipment.
The Liger’s avionics are fully integrated using three separate MIL-STD-1553B digital data buses, in what is described as "sensor fusion". The total integration of the avionics makes the A-9 Liger a "programmable" aircraft, allowing software updates to be introduced over time to increase performance and allow for additional operational roles and equipment. Much of the data generated from the onboard sensors and by cockpit activity is digitally recorded throughout the length of an entire mission. This information can be replayed in the cockpit or easily extracted for detailed post-mission analysis using a data transfer unit that can also be used to insert mission data to the aircraft. The A-9’s CONPASS tactical navigation system combines information from multiple onboard systems such as the air data computer, radar altimeter, and GPS to continuously calculate the aircraft’s location and define the weapons’ release and impact point.
The Liger is using the AE-14/C pulse-Doppler X band multi-mode radar, developed by HarpiaDS. The all-weather radar is capable of locating and identifying targets 120?km away, and automatically tracking multiple targets in the upper and lower spheres, on the ground and sea or in the air. It can guide several beyond visual range air-to-air missiles to multiple targets simultaneously and can fully integrate modern weapons such as the AIM-120C-7 AMRAAM, AIM-9X Sidewinder, and MBDA Meteor missiles. In addition, the new A-9G aircraft integrates the BlackPearl Infra-red search and track (IRST) sensor, which is capable of passively detecting thermal emissions from air and ground targets in the aircraft's vicinity.
The A-9GS Liger is compatible with a number of different armaments, including air-to-air missiles such as the AIM-9X Sidewinder, JDAM and Paveway laser-guided bombs, air-to-ground missiles such as the BrimStone or the KH-29DE anti-tank missile, and anti-ship missiles such as the RBS-15 and AM39 Exocet. The A-9 is also typically capable of carrying Thales' Digital Joint Reconnaissance Pod and other advanced and integrated electronic warfare suite platforms, capable of operating in an undetectable passive mode or to actively jam hostile radar.
Due to export limitations that have been applied by the French Government, the AM-39 Exocet anti-ship missile is not carried by the A-2T. In addition, some crucial French-made subsystems have been replaced with equivalent from IAI of Israel and the DEFA canons were replaced by four Bernardini Mk-164 cannons from Italy.
A missile approach warning system passively detects, tracks and neutralize incoming missiles. The Liger is also equipped to use a number of different communications standards and systems, including SATURN secure radio, Link-16, ROVER, and satellite uplinks.
