HOW TO..

Sailing

  • Activate 1
  • Adjust wind speed to 15 - 50 mph blowing directly from the back of the ship.
  • Slowly use VTOL slider to turn left/right then the Trim slider to move the sail to match the wind direction.
  • Once the desired direction is achieved, adjust VTOL slider to keep the ship sailing in that direction.
  • This ship can only sail on winds blowing at 0° from the back up to 100° to the sides.
  • top speed - wind should be directly behind the ship then put Trim slider to neutral. The ship veers slightly to the left so adjust VTOL accordingly.
  • To fold sails, deactivate Group 4 and 5 then turn off LandingGear.

Ballista operations

  • Activate 2
  • Wait for the cranks to stop rotating
  • Select "Ballista" in weapons flyout
  • press and hold Brakes, wait for the cranks to stop rotating.
  • Keep holding Brakes and press/hold FireWeapons for 1 second.
  • Release both keys and the process starts over again.
  • If you had unbind "Zero Throttle" from B key on the Control Settings, you can use this weapon while boarding.

Boarding

  • Activate 4
  • LandingGear on = right side boarding
  • LandingGear off = left side boarding
  • Approach the target and match its speed.
  • Aim the boarding hook launchers using pitch and roll. Keep in mind that the hooks are short ranged (just max 1 1/2 the length of the ship) and will launch in an arc.
  • Throttle up to 95% and wait for the winches to stop buzzing (60 sec.)
  • Throttle up to 100% to launch the hooks.
  • If the hooks latched on, throttle down to >= 10% to pull the ship closer to the target
  • turn the sail away from the target and adjust rudder to keep the ship parallel to the target.
  • on the weapons fly-out, fire "Boarding Action" to launch boarding party. It fires 1 ammo/second for 5 seconds and launches the boarding party once it reaches 0.
  • remember, you can control the King manually. See how to do that on the controls list.
  • Activate 5 to detach the hooks. (These and the boarding guys are one time use only :D)
  • USS Beast and USS Tiny are too tall so only the escort destroyers and WW2 era ships are the valid targets for boarding.

OTHER NOTES:

  • Adjusting rudder is easier when you use keyboard shortcuts instead of dragging the VTOL slider with your mouse.
  • The ship has a tendency to bounce if wind is on when you start the flight scene. To remedy this, turn off wind and restart. Also, please set Water to Medium or High.
  • Use the predictor to aim the bowmen and the ballista.
  • Dont shoot at the mast or the red portion of the sails. It may explode and do bad things.
  • Don't fire the "Boarding Action" weapon unless you intend to board something.
  • The boarding crew goes through some parts of the ship like a ghost when moving from left/right. Please ignore.

MAIN FEATURES:

  • Wind powered only
  • Floppy and foldable sail. (The first design to implement both on a sailboat in SP history, afaik)
  • Moveable riggings
  • Functional weapons, crew and a boarding party
  • hundreds of Funky Trees expressions (most are just simple & functions, tho)

STORY

Stella Maris - Star of the Sea

Christened as "Stella Maris" by her French owners, this ship is your typical trading ship that can be usually seen trading along the Baltic coast all the way to the Bay of Biscay. Everything changed, however, after the crusader army's defeat at Hattin and the capture of Jerusalem, the papacy began preparation for a third crusade to take back what was lost to the Muslim.

Her owners began rebuilding the ship for war. It cargo hold widened to accommodate war horses and two towers are erected upon her deck as platform for archers. After all work is done, the new Stella Maris was presented to the king of England on 1189. She is to be part of the main crusader fleet to sail from England to the Mediterranean and to the Holy Lands by way of Sicily.

Stella Maris participated in the siege of Acre where the crusader fleet crushed Saladin's grand fleet that was attempting to supply the city. The fleet also covered for the main army as they marched along the coast southwards to Arsurf, Jaffa and Ascalon.

At Ascalon, Stella Maris was given a new task to ferry noble hostages and treasures captured from battles to Cyprus. Then she was to ferry supplies back to help rebuild Ascalon's defenses.

Her last task was to ferry Richard I, king of England, home after the crusade had ended. But fate would not be so kind, the ship was hit by a storm and was wrecked near the shores of Aquileia. This forced the monarch to pursue a dangerous land route across Europe where he was captured a imprisoned for several years.

This has got to be the best build of the month, if not six months... this is so well thought out and executed - totally impressed! (I need to upgrade my MacBook pro as a result of this!)

@OrangeConnor the hull and the sail is around 1600 parts. 120++ on the 4 boarding hooks, 160+ on the ballista, 49 x 8 parts on archers, 50+? x 8 on knights, 120 parts for the king, around 120 parts on the flags, some 30 parts for the night lamps

In short, building the ship with a hollow hull coupled with numerous human shaped objects will make the part count balloon like no tomorrow.

@Lazer22 nothing much will happen. It will retract some winches and lock the sail to neutral and will disable the Boarding Action gun.
