(100 Followers Special) M2020 Main Battle Tank

18.8k plane634  1.7 years ago

Real quick I'm just gonna be 1000% real with y'all, I teased this tank as if it wasn't ready for a while, when in reality this tank was complete when the Luna-M wasn't even thought of yet, which is over a month ago at this point, I waited for that long so that I can make that morbiusly a beast video as a trailer which was delayed a bunch

Description

The M2020 is an unidentified North Korean main battle tank that was unveiled during a military parade commemorating the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Worker's Party. The name "M2020" has been given as an unofficial name for the tank. Visually, the tank appears to be a mixed design of the American M1 Abrams and the Russian T-14 Armata, although its overall layout is more similar to the latter than the former. The tank is equipped with composite armor and parts of the turret appear to have armor up to 10 cm thick to defend against top attack munitions. The tank's main gun is derived from the Russian 2A46 125 mm gun, which are also used on the Chonma-216 and Songun-915 tanks, a coaxial machine gun is located left of the main gun and an AGS-30 grenade launcher is located on the left side of the roof of the turret, the tank also has two Bulsae-3 anti-tank missiles on the right side of the turret, the Bulsae-3 missiles are said to be reversed engineered Soviet/Russian 9K111 Spigot or 9M133 Kornet missiles. The M2020 is believed to powered by a 1200 horsepower engine, and the estimated mass of the tank is above 50 tons. The tank features panoramic sights and a meteorological mast on the right side, and smoke grenade launchers at the rear of the turret protected by slat armor, the commander and gunner have separate sights, which are believed to have thermal imaging devices, hard kill active protection systems (APS) are possibly fitted on the lower part of the turret; two in the front corners and two on each side, each containing three tube launchers, the sensors used for the possible active protection systems are located in the front corners of the turret.

In this SimplePlanes version, well yeah this is the M2020, there are so many things on this tank that if I listed it here it's gonna be longer than the Stratolaunch's wingspan so I just put that on it's own section just below, you can skip ahead there if you want to. Other than that this tank is made on an estimated scale, using a bunch of photographs as reference and that one Tank Encyclopedia rendition of the tank as the blueprint, so it is a bit rough in some places, but at least it looked good overall. Idk what are the specs of the main gun and ATGM so those are estimations also. This was my first ever proper tank (but not the first tank vehicle as that award goes to the 2P25) and it turned out really well after like a week and a half of building, with 7 of those days spent on the turret shape and tank stabilizer lmao

Features

Triple-mode aiming controls (credits to @SmokeyNagato's tutorial and @DFA007's T-72B3 for the help with the mechanism)

The tank's literally got every aiming mode imaginable, there's VTOL+Trim aiming (though this one's mostly for show), Pitch+Roll aiming, and even camera aiming, the latter two isn't synchronized with each other however.

Dual-plane stabilizer (sort of) & toggleable target tracking

The tank's had both a horizontal stabilizer and vertical stabilizer, they do work but neither were good at their job, so instead of aiming the gun like you would hip-fire a Tankgewehr 39, there's a target tracking that made things easier, at least on the horizontal part.

Camera controlled CITV & loader's AGS-30 + thermal sight for both gunner and commander

Not only do you have like what 2 weapon systems to use already, you also get an extra AGS-30 grenade launcher, this is operated by the loader and is camera-aimed, the commander's station also worked, it didn't really have much purpose other than to look around and look around cooler with the thermal sight, but it's there anyways. Also the thermal sight isn't actually a thermal sight but rather just a somewhat bright glass pane.

Modeled and animated Bulsa'e-5 (NK's 9M113 Kornet copy) (FT code thanks to @FairFireFlight)

In this tank you have two Bulsa'e-5 ATGMs ready to fire, this is mainly used for long range engagements as the gun isn't accurate that far out, these have a max range of 9km and can target both air and ground targets, however it is strongly advised that it is only targeting ground targets, it's not an anti-air missile y'know.

Working hard-kill APS (based on @MRpingouin Trophy APS) + smoke launchers

So yeah there's an APS, it can intercept AI missiles coming from the front and sides of the tank, however it couldn't intercept ones coming from above or behind the tank, or missiles from player-made builds. Whilst the smoke launchers are just glorified flare dischargers.

Working ERA & damage model (based on @Wernster's damage model, a forum post (it talks about discovering that glass can be used as ERA but I can't find it), @DFA007's T-72B3, and @BoganBoganTheMan's Flakpanzer Gepard)

The ERAs are just glass that covered some parts of the tank, these blew up if struck by a slug shell or a couple of MG rounds, the damage model is based on @Wernster's damage model, however I also reinterpreted this as 1mm = 20 health, making it more closer to @BoganBoganTheMan's Flakpanzer Gepard damage model, however it is kinda hard to destroy it still, I mean even the rubber sides skirts can take like 7 shots, so in any case just chuck an HE shell into it.

Lights and Brake Lights

There's no traffic (except maybe the convoys but anyway) in SimplePlanes but at least it looked cool, also it still wouldn't be road legal anyways, it's missing the turn signals.

Controls

AG1 : switch from transport mode to combat mode
AG2 : activate APS
AG3 : activate thermals
AG4 : activate target tracking
AG5 : open hatches
AG6 : switch to reverse when in combat mode
AG7 : lights

Transport mode controls

Pitch + Roll : throttle and steering
VTOL : turret horizontal turn
Trim : gun elevation

Combat mode controls

Pitch + Roll : turret horizontal + elevation
Throttle : throttle
Yaw : steering

Something else I found out

So basically when I was constructing this tank, I was having a really, really hard time making the horizontal stabilization for the turret (in fact I still am, I mean just look at the tank's horizontal stabilizer), it kept shaking violently left and right, I spent three afternoons trying to make it work but it just won't, until the next day just as I was about to scrap the stabilizer altogether I noticed that at moments the shaking sort of calmed down, then it went up again, then it went down, then up, so on, my game was very laggy at the time due to the suspension, so I put the tank on a pedestal and simply let it sit there, and that's when I found out that my game was so laggy it couldn't even run the FT code properly, so, if you're having troubles with an FT code while running on 14 fps like i did, that's probably why.

@plane634 You can place an ordinary aircraft, it is possible with the coat of arms of Ukraine, if it is a MIG-29, but in any case, do not tie it around a certain person

@Pepopi I see, sorry that the post bothers you and potentially many other people, I didn't think it thoroughly before posting the entire thing around that character, it was a final minute decision to make the airplane look 'cooler', but instead it generated a controversy, and that's entirely my fault, I could've posted it as a standard Mig-29 with no association and it would've done just fine, again, sorry for the actions I've done, it's up to you to forgive or not, I wish to stay neutral on the conflict, hopefully it will be resolved one day.

@plane634 Yes I understand. But your action is wrong. This is a protagonist in the war between countries. He represents a character who is a Nazi towards the Russians. Not a small number claim that he mocks our military. Nazism is not the best solution. It is possible that I am biased towards this post, since I myself am Russian. If so, sorry

@Pepopi I'm sorry about that, but I didn't block you, that post comments' were nuked and no one can comment on it, not even me, I believe someone tagged a mod.

You can say what you want about it, I'm not going to stop you, I don't have an agenda posting that plane, I didn't have that plane to shade on Russians nor to praise Ukrainians, it was simply a plane I think is cool, just as cool as any fighter jet really, be it the Su-35, Su-57, F-22, F-35, etc

I am writing here because you blocked me under the post about the ghost of Kyiv :). I don't know what you answered me, but that post is already politics. On the Internet, this implies ongoing wars, actors, etc. The ghost-actor at the moment
