Yokosuka D4Y4 Model 43 "Suisei"

Thanks for the featuring everyone ! Enjoy this plane. ;)

.

.

  • The D4Y4 is like his predecessors a single-engined carrier based dive-bomber. The plane was operated by either a crew of two in tandem (Pilot, Navigator/Gunner) or single operated (RATO / Kamikaze).

  • The Model 43 is my submission for the Kamikaze challenge of BogdanX. Sadly due to my legendary speed i couldn't make the RATO version.

  • Be remind that the D4Y4 was NOT concieved as a Kamikaze plane, but the end of the war and desperate times brough us with this version.
A lot of sources contradict each others but the various japaneses books are clear, it was adapted as a Kamikaze plane. And with the amout of field modification that the D4Y3 and Model 43 recieved its hard to keep track of it all.

  • So, to recapitulate the model 43 got improved survability by adding a 75mm Armored glass upfront and various armored plates around the crew compartiment as well as armored fuel tanks. Less speed, more bomb capacity and no defensive armement, the tail-hook was removed due to land-based operation.

  • As for the 601st paint scheme i didn't see any avidence that they have performed Kamikaze attack as the same intensity as the others specialized Tokko units. But i have a personal preference for this unit and a lot of pictures are related to them.

Current paint scheme : 601st Kokutai Dark Green 2 (AS-21) and Light Grey (AS-2).
Allied reporting name : Judy

.

  • The D4Y4 Model 43 features are :

    • No.80 Ordinary Bomb (800kg) (Non-detachable)
    • Detailed landing gear.
    • Position lights.
    • Semi-realistic engine exhaust.
    • Custom controls surfaces (w/ Flaps and Air-brakes).

Notes :

  • The flaps got an issues during the construction phase and i couldn't fix them, so they are not deploying as intended.

  • Also, there were reports of Kamikaze attacks with more than the pilot, sometime the radio/gunner was with the "voluntary" pilot to his final mission.

  • The D4Y4 was intended to be used as a regular dive-bomber, that's why you can see some of them with twin 7.7 mg's and bomb-bays. Due to recoversion from D4Y3's into D4Y4's.

  • And last note, a RATO Booster pack of 3 can be outfitted to the D4Y4, that why you have late D4Y3 / D4Y4 with this "space" in the lower fuselage, but not only that, the RATO version needed to have a reinforced tail and sealed off gunner position.

.

  • Controls groups :

    • CG.1 : (VTOL Down) Lowering the flaps.
    • CG.6 : (Toggle) Positions lights.
    • CG.7 : (VTOL Down) Lowering Air-brakes.
    • CG.8 : (VTOL Down + Toggle) Toggle rear wheel yaw mouvement.
    • CG. "G" : (Toggle) Toggle landings gears
    • CG. "F5" : (Switch) Switch to orbit view of the bomb.
    • CG. "F6" : (Switch) Switch to cockpit view

.

  • Ground spawn :
Set the flaps to chevron 2, taxi if needed, then full throttle, keep your elevator to the maximum until you are at 350km/h / 217mi/h. Then set your flaps chevron to 0.5. In the air, desactivate the yaw for the rear gear with CG:8.

  • Mid-air spawn :
Full throttle, set your flaps to chevron 0.5 and set the gears up.

  • Kamikaze Attack :
As for attacking the target, just use your plane and dive on it, from almost all angles.
Be advised that the actual bomb is placed at the nose.

  • Crews pictures :
    .
Some of them are crews of D4Y2 and Model 33, but i found them interesting, Its nice to put faces on thoses pilots.

    .
Thoses cliches were taken around July 1945, some of them still retained theirs bomb-bay doors, field modifications are tricky to track.
Also, you can see that some of theses plane have also a navigator.
  • After the war :
    .
After the war a lot of D4Y's were left to mercy of mother nature in immense graveyards or on airfield, such a shame that today none survived. Today, only 3 restored exemplaries remain, 1 D4Y1, 1 D4Y2 and a refited D4Y1 was re-storeded to look like a D4Y3.
One is possible to see at Yasakuni Shrine in Ichigaya, a beautifull plane, also the replica of the D4Y3 is at "The Planes of Fame Air Museum" at Chino California. Like i said its a converted D4Y1 into a D4Y3, that's why he got a tail-hook.
For me, the D4Y2 is best looking dive-bomber period.
But im sure that you guys already figured out that was in love with this plane. ^^
  • Note : Apologies, but i don't know how to read japanese so i can't give you the subtitles of thoses pictures. ^^

The only spec i got right is the fuel amout ^^
Also, thoses are for the D4Y3, sadly i couldn't found one for the D4Y4, but its almost the same.

> Last words :
Im mainly building with eyesight and without making my planes perfectly by the bleueprints (or rather with my inability to do so), as expected scale, shape and specs are not scaled to the real plane. But i try my best to have the plane mimic the general shape and performance.
In any case, have fun with this build. :)

@Brayden1981 Reconnected specifically to respond to your message. I haven't played SP since 4.5 years ago. Do not expect much news from me. However, i'll leave the work i have done on this website. Have a pleasant day.

@BogdanX Hello BogdanX, thanks for your review.
For visual, what do you mean look like wood ? ^^ (EDIT: got it)
For construction, i'll take your review as a good starting point for next builds. Thanks a lot !
For functionality, you nailed me. I usually do my plane as model planes at first, and flying planes second. And without Mostly fixing the flight performance on the original design, this plane shouldn't fly at all. ^^
For accuraty, did you checked Combined fleet as well ? They got really good stats on it.
And for the impression, thanks again for the review, you already helped me outmatch my old building technique and your tips made my two recent planes very appreciated and good looking. I'll take your advices seriously (especially for the functionality). And try to do my best for the next plane to fly this time. ^^

Btw, what can i do with the angled wing thing ?

@BogdanX What do you mean ? That the error that occur with the trim is causing the auto-roll ? Or that its correcting it in your plane ?

@AdlerSteiner did I? must have only said that once. If you can find a case that reliably reproduces it, I'd try and fix it.

@ChiChiWerx many, many times. but he keeps saying "re-intsall it", and i did. so that's how the agility of my piston engined builds were made to do a barrel roll
