He 212 A-2

Description:
The Heinkel He 212 "Falke" was a german fighter with a very advanced flight performance for the time, the nickname "Falke" (falcon) refers to it's high speed and maneuverability.

Some fictional history:
By late 1942, Germany needed fighter aircraft with greater escort capabilities than the Bf 109, so Heinkel planned to make the "He 212", based on the He 112 design. The He 212 was manufactured in March 1943 and first flew the same month. Because the He 212 could not reach 600 km/h (370 mph) in level flight, the project was nearly cancelled, but Heinkel promised to improve the aircraft. By January 1944, the He 212 had lived up to expectations, reaching impressive speeds of 770 km/h (480 mph), faster than fighters of the time. However, as the Luftwaffe began to experience a shortage of trained pilots, the He 212's cockpit was modified to more closely resemble that of the Bf 109G. This further delayed its entry into service, until it finally entered service in February 1944. With a cockpit similar to that of the Bf 109, pilots familiar with the Bf 109 required less training to adapt to this aircraft.

The engine, manufactured by BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) with 2,200–2,500 hp, combined with laminar-flow wings, allowed the He 212 to achieve relatively superior flight performance, making it a very advanced fighter for its time. The He 212, with a full tank and external tanks, could fly between 4 and 5.3 hours, at cruising speed, the Falke could fly between 7.4 and 9.9 hours, making it ideal for escorting long-range bombers like the He 177. However, despite the He 212's highly advanced flight performance, the lack of trained pilots meant that the He 212 rarely showed its full potential.

The Falke served primarily as an escort fighter; its role could also change to interceptor or ground attack depending on the specific mission, making it a versatile fighter. The He 212 served from February 1944 until Germany's defeat in 1945.
