The M14 is an American 7.62mm NATO semi-automatic battle rifle. It was designed to replace the M1 Garand, a semi-automatic battle rifle that employed anachoristic en-bloc clips and a non-NATO caliber. It won the US competition over the FAL, due to its lighter weight, simplicity, automatic gas regulator, and most likely, it was an American design. The rifle has the distinction of the longest serving rifle in the US military, but the shortest service as a battle rifle, at only 5 years before its replacement by the M16. The rifle has been successfully adapted into marksman rifles. In 2002, the rifles were modernized into the M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle. Virtually every aspect of the weapon was upgraded, while retaining the original receivers. These were issued to troops in Afghanistan, as the long engagement distances meant that smaller-caliber weapons were less effective.
