Rolling tendency in symmetrical aircraft?

3,000 merasmusthewizard  4.7 years ago

Does anyone else have this issue? I’m working on a new aircraft and it has a tendency to roll to the left, more noticeably at higher speeds. Very slowly, not enough to interfere with controlling the aircraft, but enough to be annoying. As far as I can tell, the aircraft is perfectly symmetrical and my attempts to fix the issue have failed. Anyone else having this problem?

It’s also a single engine prop, if that matters. Are torque, P-factor, and propeller slipstream simulated in the game?

Edit: I noticed that one block on the left wing was causing more drag than the same, mirrored block on the right wing, despite being the same weight and shape. However, when I removed both blocks, the issue still persisted. Possible flaw in drag simulation?

I know it has something to do with the vertical wing size, but I still don't know why it happened, maybe because the size is too small or too big, but idk

Most vexing. Try mirroring and then mirroring the opposite way. Bit of a pain if you have lettering and working flaps etc.

So I’ve identified the cause of the problem, however I can’t fix it. Anyone want to help with some XML editing?

The worst kind of autoroll is the kind when your plane is 100% symmetric, has no drag, and the CoM and CoT are centred, and all your wings are attached in the same style to opposing parts that are default rotation, and your plane still has autoroll lol. Aka what happened on my Moray lol

I have it in my Warburg F-13 Longhorn.
It's perfectly symmetrical, but it rolls to the right and is off-balance upon takeoff.

Mirroring the parts doesn’t work either, they’re still modeled with uneven drag for some reason.

Thanks, but I use iOS and can’t edit XML @Strikefighter04 @FairFireFight

If all these don't work, try to add some weight to the opposite side. Start with 50lb near the center and load level, then slowly move to the side until it's balanced. Rarely works but worth the trouble. Ah and don't forget is your cockpit at center?

I'm having a similiar issue happen on my project too rn, you'd think over 5k hours in the game would help but nope! Even tried mirroring the entire craft and it started rolling in the other direction.

its a glitch in the drag model , Open the drag view and eliminate all asymmetric drag , also set mass and drag scale on details to 0

I think developpers should had center of Drag it the next update so it would be a lot easier to fix this issue

It seems to be a flaw… It happens to me often when using Cylindrical parts in UFO type craft.

Causes: off center CoL CoM CoT
    Off center drag

That happens to me too but prop torque is also simulated

In SP, it's called auto-roll, and it all has to do with drag on individual parts. To get rid of it, use the drag visual, look at the uneven parts, then remove the drag scale from the parts on both sides using XML property dragScale. OR, you can try mirroring over and over again until it works.
