SIMPLE IDEA: Flaps

18.6k F104Deathtrap  6.1 years ago

Windows users like me have been able to easily make flaps for some time now, simply create control surface and xml mod the input to the VTOL slider and then install a rotor or something to fool the game into displaying the slider on screen. Oh, did I say that was easy? I meant it wasn't impossible, like it is for some users.

How about we simplify this process and allow VTOL to be one of the available inputs for control surfaces? I know there are plenty of folks that don't use or care about flaps, but this would be a very small change that could save a lot of trouble. Maybe consider making the Trim Slider an available input as well? Trim tabs would be so wonderful. This would be little more than a UI change, as these inputs are already compatible through XML, they'd just need to be included in the workshop and changed so that they trigger the sliders to appear in game.

TLDR: PLZ make VTOL and TRIM inputs for control surfaces in workshop. Thanks for reading, I love this game.

@thecrazyspacesoviet There are two ways I know of. The noob way is to place many wings in the same place, so it just looks like a single wing. This is really buggy and a real pain.

The easier way is to use either XML editing or a mod (Overload or Finetuner) to scale the wing down by 1/3 or 1/4 normal its size and then adjust it back to whatever size/shape you need as if it were a normal wing. The result is that the wing will have lift equal to 3 or 4 times its apparant size in the game.

@F104Deathtrap I do support the idea of making wing control surfaces use VTOL/Trim sliders incase you thought otherwise from what I said. But how do you maximize the lift with he game physics without putting the flap directly under/above the wing?

    That would be nice.

Please link to a uservoice about flaps, or make one yourself.

You can do it on Android too, the VTOL slider automatically appears when you type "VTOL", no need to fool the game

It hasn't happened by now, it never will.

That trick is also on android.

@thecrazyspacesoviet Yes, that works, and it's also pretty darn close to how split flaps work in real life. Many people have developed a variety of work arounds, but I think this would be a relatively painless bit of programming that could really boost the experience for a lot of players.

What I do is place a 2nd wing layer underneath the wing and attach rotatorsto it. It doesn't look as appealing up close but it works well. (Doing this also doubles wing lift)

Sounds interesting, especially considering that iOS users won't have to beg PC ones to make them flaps.

@ForeverPie Make the interface more like rotors? Sounds good to me.

How about a customizable flaps control surface? You can edit the amount of slots, and the degree reflection for each slot.
