SPVR cockpit "guide"

35.3k V  2.5 years ago

After testing out a bunch of aircraft and cars and boats and etc in VR, I can say that there a lot of issues in cockpit building that lead to me being unable to drive or fly without going into the designer and adding controls and fixing things. So here is a "guide" on making better cockpits.

1: [REDACTED] no longer needed after andrew added the dummy reference

2: move the stick further, and the dashboard closer.
When I grab the yoke/stick, I usually can't pull up all the way as the controller can't go through my chest. I cannot just tilt the controller to move the stick, I have to move my controller with the stick.
I also have to lean really far forward to grab controls. Please make them reachable.

3: no placing controls below the chair
Sort of an extension to point 2, but I can't grab controls that are inside of my chair, as that's where they usually end up

4: be mindful of computer power!
VR is much more taxing than playing normally, you won't be able to run as many parts.

5: no mods!
Normal mods don't transfer to SPVR. Though owning both regular SP and SPVR will allow mods to work.

6: make sure you set up controls correctly, a lot of builds have levers, yokes, buttons, switches, and flight sticks that clip through stuff when used, some also flat out do the wrong thing, as a lever for pitch may work in the wrong direction, sorta ruining the experience.

7: [removed] this was obsoleted and I'm too lazy to renumber the list

8: make sure there are controls for EVERYTHING.
When someone leaves out a switch or lever for an important activation group, it makes it harder to use the build.
Also for the love of God, add a throttle lever to cars. I cant push the gas pedals.

9: VR hands can phase through parts. Meaning you can make your own decked out flight stick or yoke using cylinder grips. Don't be afraid to scale cylinder grips along their length, but scaling their diameter can cause issues. Cylinder grips have the same input properties as the other flight stick parts, the only difference is the model and some VR sided stuff that doesn't matter.

10: scaling cameras DOES NOT scale the player.

Scaling the camera only scales the model. I'm still my normal size no matter the scale

Another note is make sure everything has either a label or a tooltip, unless it's super obvious like the stick/throttle. This is something the stock aircraft need improving on. It's easy on PC to just press stuff and look at what happens to the craft, it's harder in VR if you can't see from in the cockpit.

@MrShenanigansSP if it is above the chair, it physically cannot be below the chair at the same time, as that would cause a paradox

@V well you said that you cannot access controls below the chair but what about above the chair

@MrShenanigansSP not sure what you mean, as above the chair is not below it

I have a question on the "no placing controls below the chair” list is it possible to put a switch above the seat? (since some seats irl needs you to arm the ejection seat in order to eject)

If you attach a cylinder grip or some other part, say a fuselage block, would moving the grip also move the fuselage if it was unattached or attached to a free spin rotator

For the yaw (as well as car pedals) I would just plug in a set of usb rudder pedals, and I assign left toe brake to brake (car) and right toe brake to pitch.

Should I just tag you in an unlisted build so you can test to see if the controls are all within reach?

@PlaneFlightX both. You need to render 2 screens and you have to do twice the computational work for it. You also need to compute the position of the headset and other tracked objects. And all the physics SP runs

@rexzion good question... Make something like that and I'll try it out later. Though you need to figure out a way to make it latch into place. Perhaps magnets will work. I'm pretty sure the strength of a VR person is infinite, but I can adjust the magnet strength on my end if needed

just a question, can you make canopies close by making a canopy on a hinge and making a handle made out of the grip part?

@3 So the grip gives you a point to hold and move around and the control base functions as input. Thanks you

someone should make a VR human thing so people know how to distance their parts n stuff

@ZWLenning not sure, will have to try it out later, as my power is out atm

@3 when you say scaling radius causes issues - does that apply if the entire thing is scaled linearly, E.G: a size of 0.2, 0.2, 0.2

I am making a checklist someone can pick up and read within the cockpit.
    .
Is SPVR still taxing on the CPU, or is it also GPU?

@F104Deathtrap you can stick a cylinder grip inside of something. you can scale its length, but scaling its radius causes issues. you can use control bases for EVERYTHING. they can have the same function as a lever or switch. though using one as a small switch causes issues
