If you are leaving for a while, just leave a message about it in your profile. Don't make a post about it.
Bye-Bye posts are depressing. When new players go on the forums and it's jammed up with teary-eyed fairwells, they get the idea that the game is in decline. How do I know? Because "Is the game dying?" posts are also super-common.
I understand, you want your friends to know what happened, or when you're coming back, or why. So leave a message on your profile. Forum posts get buried after a day or two, in order for people to get the message they will probably go through your profile to find it under your posts. So just leave your message there, where people looking for you can find it.
And to anyone I've insulted by saying "No one cares," I am sorry. Of course somebody cares. Leave those people a message that they can find.
Just talk nice to them!

To be fair, people have been making leaving posts since pretty much the creation of the site.

The reality is, yes while a lot of popular users have left, a lot of "new users" have also effectively replaced those people. It's just another chapter in the book so-to-speak, rather than the last page.

The honest truth is that very few people care about your leaving. To them you are just another user to which will be quickly replaced by new blood. To the few who do care, they will come to your bio. That's where people should put your goodbyes, not the forums.
