External Graphics Card: Experiences? How fiddly are they? Any bad experiences while using them?

227k jamesPLANESii  3.7 years ago

Our family computer that I use for SP and all my other simulators is an all-in-one desktop computer made in 2016 called a HP 24-b017a.
Most of it’s specs are pretty good, ad you can probably tell cuz I can run very high part count builds without any problems. It has 16 GB of RAM, an Intel i7-6700T processor, a lot of it’s stats are pretty good.
However, it has one major downfall: it’s graphics card.
It’s a Nvidia GT 930MX. I mean, it’s OK for basic games, but when it comes to simulators like what I play, it’s... well... terrible. I have to have all my games on minimum settings for a decent frame rate, and X Plane and BeamNG only just run at 20 FPS at low graphics. This is due to my GPU.
I’ve had issues with the power of my graphics card for ages, but now MSFS has come out, and, well, it can’t load the menu. :(

Remember, this is a family computer, and for most of what we do, it’s more than adequate. And all of it’s other specs are pretty good for what I do. But just the graphics card is inadequate. My family isn’t prepared to sell this computer and buy a brand new $2500 computer when this one does most of what we need it to do. And just for 1 person. Your parents might do it but that’s either because they’re loaded or your spoilt or something. And I totally agree with them ngl. Why pay $2500 for a new computer when I can get a brand new graphics card for less than $300?

Anyways, the man reason that I can’t simply upgrade my computer normally is because, well, this is an all-in-one computer. The most powerful compatible graphics card is the one that’s in it right now. Anything more powerful is too bulky for it. Sooooooooooooooo it needs to be external.

Ok so that’s the tedious backstory to why I need a new graphics card and why it’s pointless to have a new computer, so that you bois don’t act like money grows on trees in the comments section;

So

Does anyone have any experience with these here? Or have any tech know-how of how well these work? If there’s any software compatibility issues?

Any help will be appreciated!

Also are there any other good places to ask this that are free and I will get an good answer lol

Have a picture so that you actually end up spending a bit of time on this post rather than glasses over the excessive amounts of writing and immediately leaving. :p

What @ChrisChrisThePy said. You can build a pc that can run most games okay for about 500-700 US dollars. @jamesPLANESii

You could always have someone build you a PC from computer scrap yards if you have any near you. You can build a 2000 dollar computer for around 500 doing this. It’s extremely cost efficient and the parts are in excellent condition most of the time.

@jamesPLANESii intel integrated graphics is pretty much garbage in every way, shape, and form

@jamesPLANESii You may, you may not. Just because the new card requires more juice doesn't mean it wont work, study the PSU carefully. Prebuilt systems often use non-standard components so check around to be sure what you have.

Yeah I might need an extra power box or something to go with it @F104Deathtrap

My current PC is more than capable at running SP due to its powerful CPU and high amount of RAM, but I’m playing flight simulators, which are much more GPU heavy, which my computer struggles with @BeryllCorp

There’s no point buying a brand new PC if the one I have right now is perfectly adequate apart from 1 piece of hardware which could potentially be fixed @DOX

Minimum frame rate for simulator games to run at 1x speed is 20FPS @Pita

personally id just get a new pc. external graphics cards get you a fraction of the power and the price doesn't justify the performance

Been looking into the same thing myself. My Nitro 5 should barely be able to run MSFS, but if I get an external graphics card, as well as more RAM, it should be better

Try watching LowSpecGamer on youtube. For games like Simpleplanes the pc he builds is more than adequate

All-in-one computers are finicky. Be sure to verify you will have a safe amount of EXTRA wattage from the power supply before installing new hardware. Store bought computers often have crappy power supplies because people don't know to look at that kind of stuff.
