It's been a while since we've put out some dev notes. 657 days to be exact.....but who's counting? SimpleRockets 2 is coming together nicely, so I'm excited to start talking a bit more about its development.
One of the biggest challenges we've run into with SR2 has been the terrain generation. It's quite a step up from the simple, stationary 2D terrain from SimpleRockets 1. Now we have fully 3D planets with oceans, mountains, deserts, craters, etc. Also, now they rotate and have realistic lighting and atmospheric effects. It's taken a very long time to get things looking good and performing well. In fact, yesterday I was flying around this terrain at 60fps on my iPhone 7.
Here's what Smearth currently looks like in SR2:
