there are 2 different race modes, the ones in the race category and the race mode you can find in the sandbox category. in the latter you can choose a track and an ai to race against
it would be better to scale your builds to 1:1, especially cars as anyone who is actually looking to race with your build would likely use a mod map race track, which are usually scaled 1:1 (the recent Nordschleife for example). simply because the stock map doesn't offer much in terms of car-race tracks and as you've said the tracks are far too big.
