Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21MF Fishbed

Hey everyone, Zerø here. I've made an american 3rd gen fighter, so I figured I might as well make it's counterpart.

Target practice.

Yems.

Introduction:

The Mikoyan-Gurevich Izdeliye 96F, better known as the MiG-21MF is a 3rd generation of the MiG-21 variant, a soviet single engine, delta winged, supersonic fighter interceptor. The MiG-21MF introduced many new things to the MiG-21, these included extra fuel capacity, a new SP-22 radar, a new R13-300 afterburning turbojet engine, and the addition of the R-60 heat-seeking air to air missiles.

History:

The MiG-21's development can be taken back to it's roots in early 1950s when Mikoyan had studied for a prototype, called the Ye-1. This prototype would later be reworked as they found out that the engines were too weak. The new prototype was designated the Ye-2. However, the first design with a tailed delta wing configuration had only been seen after the Ye-4. The first 3 prototypes had a swept wing. It made it's maiden flight in 16th of June 1955.

The MiG-21 was also the first ever successful fighter with the characteristics of an interceptor mixed together the Soviet Union have ever built. It was a lightweight fighter with a relatively weak engine, making it able to push itself past Mach 2, comparable to the F-104 and the F-5. However, like many interceptor designs, the MiG-21 had a short range. What makes matters worse is that the MiG-21 had a poor fuel tank placement. When the fuel is depleted, the center of mass will move backwards to a point where it became unstable, thus becoming hard to fly.

The MiG-21 is also the most produced supersonic jet fighter of all time with 11,496 units produced, in total. Even until today, many nations still operate this 8 decade old aircraft design.

Loadout:

  • 1x GSh-23L 23mm autocannon
A dual barreled autocannon that fires 23mm rounds at a rate of 3200-3600RPM.

  • 4x R-60/AA-8 Aphid
A close range, rear aspect (unfortunately can't replicate it) heat seeking missile, known for it's agility due to the missile's lightweight structure.

  • 1x 800L drop tank
An external drop tank which carries 800L (210 US gal.) of fuel. Can be jettisoned.

Controls & Features:

Controls:

Normal controls.
Activate1: Flaps
Activate2: Nose Wheel Steering
Activate3: Jettison drop tank
Activate4: Deploy drag chutes
Activate5: Deploy airbrakes

Features:

  • Somewhat accurate flight model. How are 3rd gens easier to do, seriously?
  • Custom missiles, 4 of them. Same kind. Pft.
  • Rear airbrake will not be deployed until the tank is dropped. Does it do anything? Ehhh, no.
  • Variable nose cone, it'll move forwards at higher speeds. Though it's like, minor detail.

I needed an opponent for the F-5E as I've been having quite the fun playing with it and I figured the MiG-21's a perfect opponent. I've been making too much western fighters anyway, so I wanted to try something from the eastern side. Apart from that though, this was a quick build from me.

Also, this aircraft suffers from what I'd like to call armament part overload. Since 1/3rd or more of this aircraft's part consisted of it's armament, after you've spent them all, the game marks it as destroyed. Which sucks.

In any case, I hope you'll enjoy it, and...
