In the first fifty pages of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dorian starts to change who he is because of Lord Henry, who is obsessed with beauty and pleasure. At first, Dorian is innocent and naïve, admired for his looks and charm, and he sees life through normal moral rules. After meeting Lord Henry, though, he becomes fascinated with the idea of staying young forever and living only for pleasure, showing he wants to leave his old self behind. This change in how he thinks—wanting to focus only on looks and enjoyment—starts Dorian’s journey of reinventing himself. Wilde uses Dorian’s changing mindset to show the bigger idea of the book: how outward beauty can hide inner corruption, and how wanting to remake yourself can have serious consequences even before you act.
