@AndrewGarrison How hard would it be to add an ogive part with high smoothness? In addition to the two radii, it could take an additional input to cut it off at a given point, like a frustum.
@temporaryaccount I say any use of any tool is fine. Let's say that tomorrow someone comes up with a script that lets them convert a detailed model created in Blender to a SimplePlanes airplane with the click of a button. Not only is there nothing wrong with this, it would be a great innovation. The only correct response to it would be to ask the SP developers to integrate that method of construction into the game. Anyone who says it's "cheating" is like those people who complained when the printing press came along and books no longer had to be copied by hand, or when the mechanical loom came along and put manual weavers out of business. Innovation is good -- it eliminates drudgery and makes resources cheap and plentiful.
I think most people on this website are in school, so let me ask them, if you have to write an essay for school, do you write it by hand and claim that you should get higher marks than someone who used a laptop and a printer, because they "cheated?"
If you work, and there's someone else who does the same job in half the time, do you ask your boss to pay you more because you take longer to do the same task?
I'm sure most, if not all people on this website buy their groceries from someone else. Is there anyone who grows their own vegetables, raises their own livestock, and claims that anyone who doesn't do the same is "cheating?"
Someday, someone's going to release a game where you can use an interface like Blender/3D Studio/Solidworks to create any shape you desire, with curves as smooth as you want. Instead of laboriously building 1000+ part builds out of clunky lego-like blocks, people will be able to draw the outlines of the shape and have the game engine fill them in, so that they'd be building highly detailed airplanes in hours or days, instead of weeks or months. I wonder how many people would then say "No, it's more honorable/creative to do it the old-fashioned way! I'm still going to take months to build my planes!"
@DarthAbhinav Hmm. I've read posts on here by people who say they can run 550-part builds on their phones. Maybe your laptop needs a better GPU? But the SP game engine isn't optimised very well, that's a fact.
@DarthAbhinav No, it would just look ridiculous, with that torn, jagged finish coated in pink. No amount of pink (or rainbows, or unicorn decals) will turn my builds "soft."
Well, this is funny. "Cheaty, script abusing b__s?" I'm proud to say that yes, I do use scripts to generate the shapes for my builds. Show me someone who thinks that's cheating and I'll show you someone who's just jealous that they can't do the same. I write the scripts for every shape myself -- if anyone thinks what I do is easy, I say put your money where your mouth is and do the same, just once. I openly challenge anyone who accuses me of cheating to replicate Eris, Tenebrus II, or Hover Howitzer any way they like.
Secondly, I gather that there is this notion in the community that the amount of time spent creating a build is somehow a measure of its quality. To those who claim this, I hate to burst your bubble, but in the real world, when someone figures out a way to do something faster and more efficiently, that's considered an achievement.
@DarthAbhinav No offence taken at all, I'm just pointing out that even the name wouldn't be appropriate in my opinion. Furthermore, my builds are mostly grim-looking if not downright military. Do you see "Eros" being an apt name for any of my builds?
@Almond04 I use math to calculate precise values for the rise, run, width, and height of fuselage blocks. Earlier I used to do it manually, but now I write scripts to generate the XML for the shapes.
@DarthAbhinav Hmmm no, more about CoM vs CoL placement, the placement of wings and control surfaces along the longitudinal and lateral axes, the ratio of wing area to control surface area, and wing loading.
@goldminerpete By in-game designer I mean the editor, in "Build and Fly" mode. To open a part's settings click on it to make it turn yellow, then click the cog icon on the right side of the screen.
@SledDriver Can someone tell me if this has stopped working for them (that is, it doesn't hit the ships any more)? On my PC the ships' locations have reverted to the pre-1.7 positions.
It's because on PC you can edit the materials directly in the XML file. A material is defined by three variables: color, m (metallicness), and s (smoothness). This chart should make things clear.
If I was unfortunate enough to be on mobile, I'd ask the developers to let users edit color, m, and s values directly in the color palette editor, instead of the very limited tool we have now.
@CRJ900Pilot Given that this website is full of builds that have obviously had a lot of time put into their appearance but work as well as a bicycle with one wheel, I'd think some people would appreciate functionality over decoration. Oh well. As I said, I don't care.
@CRJ900Pilot Thanks. Just to clarify: let's see. The first version of this was a gun that could shoot the fleet from Wright Airport, but nothing else because it had a fixed elevation. The second version had elevation control. The third one had a much greater range and a spotter drone. And this, the fourth version, has full-auto fire and flies, for crying out loud. If that's too similar for someone, well, I'm happy to say that I don't care.
@Sakari And this was the unmodified build, and you gradually achieved this speed and altitude while flying normally? If yes, it must be a glitch in that particular mobile version of the game, because normally it shouldn't go faster than 1800 mph or so.
@GermanWarMachine yeah, mobiles and tablets aren't much good for serious gaming.
@tylerdeveneuxmusic Thanks for going over and upvoting so many of my old builds, really appreciate it.
@AndrewGarrison How hard would it be to add an ogive part with high smoothness? In addition to the two radii, it could take an additional input to cut it off at a given point, like a frustum.
Thanks, @getorge
@WEAPONSMITH Yeah, I saw that. Impressive work, but even at 3000+ parts the model it generates looks blocky, so it's not very practical.

@DarthAbhinav Yeah, I prefer not to brag, but all that achieves is that it lets people talk nonsense about you and steal/diminish your achievements.
@DarthAbhinav Thanks.
@DarthAbhinav Thanks
@DarthAbhinav Hmm. I've read posts on here by people who say they can run 550-part builds on their phones. Maybe your laptop needs a better GPU? But the SP game engine isn't optimised very well, that's a fact.
@harveyrobinson8 Hmm let me see if I can find the time. It might take a couple of weeks, I've gotten busy lately.
@DarthAbhinav No, it would just look ridiculous, with that torn, jagged finish coated in pink. No amount of pink (or rainbows, or unicorn decals) will turn my builds "soft."

@DarthAbhinav Eros or anything related to eros doesn't belong here because kids use this website. Is that clear enough?

Ahh I was going to upload a piston-elevated mechanism, but you beat me to it. Nice work.
@DarthAbhinav Because kids use this website?
@DarthAbhinav The first Erebus looks even more menacing.
@nfsplatinum That's funny, but just so you know, Erebus is the Greek god of darkness.
@Almond04 I use math to calculate precise values for the rise, run, width, and height of fuselage blocks. Earlier I used to do it manually, but now I write scripts to generate the XML for the shapes.
@harveyrobinson8 I already have something quite similar, can you use that as a base?
@DarthAbhinav Hmmm no, more about CoM vs CoL placement, the placement of wings and control surfaces along the longitudinal and lateral axes, the ratio of wing area to control surface area, and wing loading.
@XxMlgSwegxX Hey, you wanna play with the big boys' toys, you need a big boy computer.
@NathanMikeska Thanks, I'll put these on uservoice, after checking for duplicates.
@Kerbango Good ideas, I'm full of them.
@DarthAbhinav You know your Norse mythology.
@DarthAbhinav It's all about wing placement.
@DarthAbhinav Thanks.
@goldminerpete By in-game designer I mean the editor, in "Build and Fly" mode. To open a part's settings click on it to make it turn yellow, then click the cog icon on the right side of the screen.
@goldminerpete The in-game designer lets you have rotators that turn up to 180 degrees, and using XML modding you can go higher.
EDIT: Apparently the max limit is 360 degrees, using a value of 180 degrees with min -1 and max 1.
@CoolPeach Thanks. I think SimplePlanes has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever, if it keeps improving.
@AndrewGarrison @NathanMikeska
@dootdootbananabus You'll go far.
@dootdootbananabus Of all the things you could say about this post, you chose that?
@DarthAbhinav Thanks

Thanks @GermanWarMachine
@SledDriver Can someone tell me if this has stopped working for them (that is, it doesn't hit the ships any more)? On my PC the ships' locations have reverted to the pre-1.7 positions.
@GermanWarMachine Guten tag. Maybe I will.

@AfterShock @ForeverPie
@MAHADI A behemoth with a new, textured skin.
@Sakari Well, tell us what the glitch is already, pretty please with sugar on top...
@CRJ900Pilot "not saying you're a bad builder" Holy flying sharks, the audacity.
@CRJ900Pilot Given that this website is full of builds that have obviously had a lot of time put into their appearance but work as well as a bicycle with one wheel, I'd think some people would appreciate functionality over decoration. Oh well. As I said, I don't care.
@KSPFSXandSP Like this.
@Pilotmario It's just the logical next step...
@CRJ900Pilot That's all right, I'm not building these for those kind of people.
@Sakari And this was the unmodified build, and you gradually achieved this speed and altitude while flying normally? If yes, it must be a glitch in that particular mobile version of the game, because normally it shouldn't go faster than 1800 mph or so.
