@TheOwlAce You're referring to the refusal to engage, correct? An interesting fact behind the first heavy bomber to see combat in the Great War, the Ilya Mouromets. It actually gave the German Air Service a real hard time. Everytime they engaged them they took losses and thus pilots began to refuse to engage them as they were just too heavily defended. I took that page from history as I would imagined the German Air Service would still be much like it was during the Great War. Although the Bf-133 is a great fighter the newer types you introduced that were to replace it on a wide scale turned out to have some real issues that would have created a Great War-like environment where pilots feared their own aircraft as much as they did enemy gunfire.
The Luftwaffe, which you imagine a 1940-1960 air force to be, without the loss during the Great War, would be far different due to the conditions that created the Luftwaffe of World War II.
The post-war situation, where Germany was forced to hide their secretive and small air force, the experience gained in the Spanish Civil War, the reasonably ill equipped air arms of Poland, the lowland countries and the completely inefficient and ill prepared French Air Force created a battle hardened and disciplined Luftwaffe. Even the main individuals behind the creation of the Luftwaffe as history knows of it today were boosted to their positions of power by riding the coat tails of Hitler. Thus you have to consider how history may have played out differently without their influences.
Willy Messerschmitt was another famous figure that gave shape to the Luftwaffe we know from history. He was a chief designer/engineer that worked for Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (Hence Bf-109, Bf-109, Bf-110, etc.) It was through his connections with the Nazi party that he was able to take control of the company. If we want to get real technical the abbreviation used by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke was BFW during the Great War, it was the RLM that shortened it to only two letters! ^_~
The history of Albatros and Focke-Wulf are similar in this regard, while prior to Hitler's reign, Albatros was a symbol of German engineering and expertise - much the way Fokker was. Yet in 1931 it was forced through government pressure to merge with Focke-Wulf. (Later, Kurt Tank - a pilot and aircraft engineer under the employ of Albatros would become most influential in this new company.)
Fokker moved their operations to the Netherlands where they were unhindered
@Pilotmario We of DragonAerotech have already done considerable work on the new DragA-8A. We improved the visibility by removing the forward 20 mm assault rotary auto-cannon from its position and replaced it with a larger 30 mm assault rotary auto-cannon firing from beneath the nose. Realizing the shortcomings of the T3000s these were omitted in favor of a pair of conjoined T1000s turning contra-rotating Type 5 propellers at the fore of each boom. Though producing the same horsepower of the T2000 the performance produced by this arrangement is without question far superior to the base T2000. By switching to this propulsion system we also achieved a MUCH improved fuel efficiency rate making the use of drop tanks seem quite redundant and thus opening these pylons for additional disposable ordinance. This alteration in power plant arrangement made it all the more necessary to incorporate airbreaks into the design for use in diving attacks as well as on approach and during landing. The new Vengeance Rotary Assault-Cannon needs additional tests and alterations to the munition feed before the DragA-8A will be presented for evaluation.
Wow, does not even begin to cover this project! It looks like that thick wing gave you considerable trouble but we work with what we have and do the best we can - which you definitely did with this build! I tried taking off from Bandit when I first loaded it and apparently the runway wasn't wide enough because she caught on something and turned hard to starboard. lol No problems taking off from South Airport though. I am stunned by the sheer size, intricacy and clever adaptations such as using the jet engines as cowled radials with a T1000 prop engine as the "spinner" for looks. I wonder who the fourth person is in the cockpit though? Lenin, Stalin, Kruchiev and ... Marx perhaps? XD j/k I noticed that you had a sizable bomb bay all set up, why did you opt against adding bombs to the hardpoints? The lag factor? Anyway, good job bringing something to the table I think few would ever attempt to reproduce in SimplePlanes.
@Pilotmario Sounds like a decent review! :D I completely spaced out on adjusting the propeller size once everything was in its proper place. I mostly went with the cessna propellers to give it a more "modern" look - along the lines of the Piper Enforcer or C-130 (prior to the Newest model that is, which employs scimitar-like blades.) Perhaps its time to create the DragA-8A Carnivore? lol ^_~
@Pilotmario After flying the Pummeler I went on ahead to fly her successor, the Boar. I've got to be more of a prop-guy than jet because if given the choice between the two, despite loving the A-10 and being in awe of them when seen in person as a child, I'd still choose the Pummeler.
The Boar handles like a lead slead. While she is fast, she's a gas guzzler at low altitudes and takes a while to line up on a target and once you do you need to pull out right when accuracy of the rockets is most optimal. Misjudge that distance and you'll still take out the target ala Kamikaze. XD
The gun is indeed impressive but overpowered. (Sends bits of the bridge larger than the aircraft flying miles out to sea.) I used so-called "bridgekillers" in a lot of my designs to represent gauss weapons and my son swears by them. The trouble is that you cannot achieve kills against the other ground targets in the game, namely the ships, with this weapon. It used to send them flying off the horizon but now it just causes them to whirl about at supersonic speeds in broad circles. I haven't tried to reproduce the 30 mm Assault Autocannon (Vulcan? Avenger? Can't remember the name.) used by the actual A-10 yet, with it's high rate of fire, projectile weight and muzzle velocity with the new XML alterations so I don't know how they'll respond to that. I should probably put one together and test it out on Tiny before going after the fleet.
Needless to say, evading ground fire, guns or SAMs would be very difficult with the Boar. Although slower, I'd feel more confident in that situation with the Pummeler.
That's purely my opinion though and so should be taken with a grain of salt. I flew her only twice - so I can't say I developed any proficiency with her either.
@Pilotmario Finally DL'd the old Pummeler and was really impressed by her performance. She's not the fastest thing on the block but she's pretty stable as a gunnery and rocket platform. The use of the T2000 also makes her far more fuel efficient than the Carnivore which uses the Turboprop T3000s. I think I'll be going back to using contra-rotating T1000s with my DragA prop designs - and definitely adding flaps! The flaps, applied slightly in flight after overflying a target, helps to enhance the turn radius. It's 8 .50 cal guns can unload 56 rounds per second on a target, while I think the Carnivore's 20 mm minigun was only upgraded to 30 rounds per second. (Double the normal rate of fire but half the time between bursts.) The only, and this is a tiny advantage, is that the Carnivore is a little faster and can jettison its rocket pods to gain more speed and enhance its maneuverability if it winds up targeted by SAMs or enemy fighters. I can see why you've more or less stuck with this design for so long! (I still need to check out your' A-10 clone. XD)
@Pilotmario I checked the view from the cockpit after posting and she gives a surprisingly good view of the runway for a taildragger, along with a great view from behind the business end of that 20mm gun. I love these new XML options. I scaled up the size of the rounds to 0.78 caliber (20 mm) and used a very pale blue/white for the tracers. I also increased the rate of fire a bit to bypass the issue of only having a single gun. Initially I was going to put several .50 cals and a couple of 20 mms in the nose but settled on the single XML altered minigun. The Nightstalker I posted yesterday wound up with a nose full of business instead.lol
@Pilotmario Here's my oddball entry; DragA-8 Carnivore Attack Aircraft. I think I met all the qualifications, though, as it is a tail-dragger, the runway might not be visible. I normally take off in Orbit view and forgot this requirement. >.<
@TheOwlAce So I've seen! I've been preoccupied with my father being in the hospital with an uncertain outcome. He won't be home for months at the very least, at the worst .. well I don't want to think about it.
Pure genius! Do you know if messing with their rate of fire/caliber and such will mess with the mod you produced? I second the request made below of some guns between the Big Bertha gun and that one next to it! :D
@KingDeadshot You may not have seen the cartoon. The "invisible" part was a very defined outline of the aircraft and somehow you could make out details on it too. (Reflectivity? -_-; Wow, I'm trying to apply reason to a cartoon about superheroes from the 70s or 80s...)
I like that option!! I wonder how many Amazonian Invisible Planes, like the one Wonder Woman flew, will be gracing the skies if that is introduced?? XD
This was good fun to play around with. I kept getting buzzed by other airplanes but no harm done there. Careful about rolling when nose up and the airspeed has dropped some. I wound up cartwheeling to the left all the way to the mountainside. lol
@MrSilverWolf You weren't joking about this thing going into space just how high did you set that hidden engine's throttle at?! I wound up at over 18,000 mph and went into a rocket climb that sent this thing hurtling over 2 million feet high, disengaged the AG to go orbital, shut down all thrust and tried to wait it out on slowing down on its own. When that didn't work I used the directional jets to turn it around, but was still climbing tail first. Then I activated full throttle and added the orbital booster but with no air obviously that didn't work to change my speed or rate of climb. I shut everything down and kept applying the airbrakes but still she wouldn't stop!! XD By the time I was done, in terms of altitude, it was between a quarter and a fifth of the distance to the moon. XD When it got dark I realized I'd been waiting for it to slow its ascent for about an hour and a half, and so tried to position the cockpit area downward and hit F10 to try to jettison the "crew compartment" earthward at least. That failed and instead I got a neat screenshot of the cockpit in the center, VTOL thruster drifting behind to the left and the rest of the aircraft - intact - behind and to the right both just drifting up into the night sky separately. XD I saved this to show to my son when he gets home from school and I wanna see how it performs when you don't shove its nose towards the heavens. XD Great job on this build!
@GreenGiraffe Still on beta even on this side of the fence so do not despair too greatly. There are still kinks here and there for them to work out and contractual stuff they have to work out with their mobile versions.
Oh, definitely a GREAT idea!!!! There are some real annoying flies I'd like to prevent from spawning. And yes, I've seen an all black gloss simple hetzer floating in the water off of Yeager Field since my son DL'd it, colored it and gave it bouyancy. lol
@CanofBeans They did add a smaller rotator, a hinge "rotator", and a piston that pushes out from its mountings. Plus they gave us a new VTOL slider under the title of "Trim" while also adding trim to control surfaces where you can point your' plane more or less at the attitude you want it at and it'll try to keep it. I'd say they did a pretty bang up job on this update. The only regret I really have is once again, if you want a part to rotate in one direction but not the other you still can't do it without "true" modding. (For example I'd like my hinge joints to only go up to 75 degrees but only go down as far as their starting position on some builds.)
@Aviation I haven't played with the Engine exhaust colors yet but likely will in the future. I need to refresh my memory on RL engine exhausts to pick and choose which colors I think should be applied there. Try picking one to change and check that out, then restore it to its original color once you've seen which it applies to. Process of elimination to deduce what colors to choose to replace them. For example I'd like for my afterburner equipped aircraft to have a bluish exhaust as opposed to the stock coloration - but I need to pick out the right shades or it'll be a waste of time.
@Derpy1109 Thanks for clarifying on color aspects for tracers! I just had to search for more info after that and came up with a page that had a ton of info on tracer colors, as it applies to WW2 at the least;
@GreenGiraffe Ah sorry to hear that, I keep forgetting the multi-platform nature of this game. As a veteran of FFXI I should be able to keep that in mind though, as there were things Xbox players and PS2 players could do that as a PC user I couldn't. ^_^;
@Thelaw11 Yeah it kinda bites that we can't just nudge an angle out of a part. I am brand-new to this modding stuff and its just simple changing of figures on set parts as opposed to making brand new parts. Heck I haven't even looked at what a normal angle looks like in text yet but I have a fair idea of where that will appear and how to change it to the appropriate figure. I'm in the process of trying to swap out all the stock guns on one of my major builds to account for a realistic rate of fire, muzzle velocity, caliber, tracer color, etc.
You can offset parts using nudging, (highlight the part you want to move around, and while holding shift down use W to move it up, S down, D to the right (from the rear of the design), A to the left (Again, from the rear), E to move a part forward and Q to move a part backwards. It moves it by very small increments at a go. I am not sure how the game engine would interpret the nose gear being slightly off-center though - I haven't tried single tailwheels yet either. I'm guessing if one would have a negative impact the other would too.
@Hyperloop DOOOOOD!!! I WAS TOOLIN AT AVALANCHE WHEN IT STARTED TO ROLL AND I WAS SUDDENLY 21.4 MILLION FEET BELOW THE AIRPORT AND MOVING AT 9 MILLION MPH!!! :O
@PINK I do declare, here and now, you SUCK! lol j/k I usually have a general image in mind when I start building but as the build progresses it evolves and changes throughout the process resulting in partial or complete rebuilds at various midway points. You are definitely a talented designer/builder, far surpassing my imagination and general know-how; I genuinely offer you my praise!
Is the Republic of Hellas separate from the League of Olympia? You mentioned only two nations on Greater Paternia but that looked like it might be a third mention. If they are separate what is their political affiliation like?
The Sanctan Empire is the remnant of a global Empire if I remember your' story line right. What brought about its fall and what is it's current state of affairs?
In Renova you mentioned the dictatorship known as the Leonan Confederacy. According to modern history dictatorships have largely been given a bad rap but dictatorships can also be the early stage of development to a type of monarchy and may not necessarily be bad. Can you describe their methods/political stance a little more?
I think you also mentioned that there are other races, is that to say, sub/demi-human species or were you just meaning peoples of other cultures and the like but still human?
Nuuuu! I see these insults to Piper aviation every summer in this agricultural region and now you made such a good replica of one here?! For shame! These don't even fly, they're so ugly they REPEL THE GROUND!!! lol j/k Great work! XD
I like the bare metal finish, most modelers would probably say its unrealistically shiny but I like shiny. lol The tracer color differences are great too, it's a nice personal touch to @TheMasterSoldier 's already masterful design! ^_^
@AndrewGarrison BTW, THANK YOU for implementing the minimum length of parts down to 0.25 as requested now I can make all the different national insignia I want! That'll allow me to delete a few dozen subassemblies alone. XD
@Dredex Don't get terribly excited - we still can't go below the standard sized wheels already available so unless we build on a larger scale realistic tailwheels are still a ways off. :(
@Squirrel I tested out your' SB-4 just a few mins ago, as I spotted that interesting looking bird before I found the SB-2. I like the thought you put into the armaments section - so long as you keep the finger off of the trigger while pivoting that dorsal/tail turret to cover the forward angle, clearing the wing - so you don't shoot off your' own tails. What drew me in was the look of the eliptical wings. It reminded me of "What if a B-36 and Spitfire had a baby?" Maybe with a little Whitley thrown in for the tail. ;)
@TheOwlAce You should also provide a notation to carefully take-off despite the speed or you lose the lower quarter of your' tails due to the landing gear being so far forward. You should have named this the Mammut (sp?)! Many ships on here aren't this big. lol I was only able to safely offload the bomb load once in its entirety as the AI controlled birds don't know what distance to keep from her; Thus every test flight I tried ended in a "bird strike." lol
@Pilotmario Okay, it's official, this thing gets me in too much trouble. The destroyers seem to take offense to this thing lobbing rockets at them for some reason or other. XD Her anti-air defenses can't quite knock down their missiles so I made a rather large explosion when their missiles picked off the rangefinder tower/canopy and set off my missile battery. It was actually kind of funny how high the canopy shot into the sky!! XD They cheat, I say, they cheat!! ^_~
@Pilotmario She reminds me of the Skyraider in some ways! Man, she is a regular rocket lug, isn't she? How is she with aerial maneuvers? If you want a laugh, and an idea for a future (tongue in cheek) variant, look up the words Skyraider with Toilet Bomb. They might not have thrown in the kitchen sink ... but ... well ... look this up and you'll see with your' own eyes. lol
@TheOwlAce Urgh. It cut my post off. -_-

@DeezDucks Hence why I said I hope someone can help fix that. Do they run off of the wheels as a result of being baggy?
I hope someone can help you with this matter! :O Those are the most realistic looking treads I've yet seen on this game!!
@TheOwlAce Thanks~ I didn't know what markings to give it, so just went with generic crosses. XD
@AeroEngineering Ah darn! XD They sure look intimidating though!

It moves it by very small increments at a go. I am not sure how the game engine would interpret the nose gear being slightly off-center though - I haven't tried single tailwheels yet either. I'm guessing if one would have a negative impact the other would too.
@Pilotmario lmao That can be interpretted in the worst possible ways. XD
@bjac0 BECAUSE IT LOOKED LIKE SRIRACHA AND I WANTED TO EAT IT ON SNOW! :D
@MrSilverWolf I never knew that Boeing deviated from the -7 series like this with an airliner. Yes on the 707 and 727! XD
@Hyperloop DOOOOOD!!! I WAS TOOLIN AT AVALANCHE WHEN IT STARTED TO ROLL AND I WAS SUDDENLY 21.4 MILLION FEET BELOW THE AIRPORT AND MOVING AT 9 MILLION MPH!!! :O
Glad to hear it afterburner, you updated this just as I was preparing to submit my post while also addressing the argument below. lol
@PINK You built this in 2 hours?! -_-; I epic fail at designing aircraft... lol
XD
@Flightsonic I hope so. I expected the ship parts update before the car parts update to be honest, not that I am complaining. ;)
@Dredex Don't get terribly excited - we still can't go below the standard sized wheels already available so unless we build on a larger scale realistic tailwheels are still a ways off. :(
How does she handle with the bombs in place? I like this bird's design and flight characteristics!
It reminded me of "What if a B-36 and Spitfire had a baby?" Maybe with a little Whitley thrown in for the tail. ;)
@MrSilverWolf Great build!! ^_^ This really captures the old style "flying tubes" of the Cold War VVF! I love it!
@Pilotmario Maybe she needs an AA defense destroyer escort design? Hmm just a thought...
They might not have thrown in the kitchen sink ... but ... well ... look this up and you'll see with your' own eyes. lol
