Mechanical 14-bis

16.4k ThePrototype  5.4 years ago

This is a simple mechanical repilca of Alberto Santos Dumont's 14-bis. It is often heralded as the first powered heavier than air veichle to takeoff and land under its own power, this belief is widely accepted in certain parts of the world like Brazil. The original craft flew in 1906, the craft was basically box-kites mated to a frame and engine. The craft is steered by a tail mounted on a universal joint, making the tail one piece and able to move up and down and side to side, it acts a rudder and elevator, I decided to not include ailerions since the first version of the craft did not include them. The controls for the craft are normal. When taking off wait until you reach a speed of 60 mph and slowly pitch up until you leave the ground. Also I tried to get this to scale as best as I could, so have fun flying - ThePrototype P.S. im starting to build more craft again. So be expecting more frequent uploads.

Thanks, the last one had a few problems with the controls system. Plus the elevator was ineffective past a certain degree. But this one flys much better. And again thanks for the feedback :) @Hyattorama

Wow. This flies amazingly well. Construction is fantastic. I like it even better than the last one, which was already super cool!
