On April 21, 2021, Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto announced that KRI Nanggala had failed to report its status after conducting a torpedo firing exercise in the Bali Sea, approximately 95 km (51 nautical miles) north of Bali Island.[b][33][34] ] The Indonesian Navy stated that the KRI Nanggala requested approval at 8:00 pm to dive and fire the SUT Torpedo. At 9:00 pm, KRI Nanggala entered the inundation stage of the torpedo tubes. The last communication was made at 9:25 pm when the commander of the training task force gave approval for Nanggala to fire torpedo number 8.[35] Tjahjanto said that they lost contact with the submarine at 9.30 pm.[36] The Indonesian Navy then sent a distress call to the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office at around 9:37 pm to report a ship that was missing and had the possibility of sinking.
