Asuka's surname comes from the Japanese World War II aircraft carrier Soryu, her middle name from the American World War II aircraft carrier Langley, and her Rebuild surname from the Japanese World War II destroyer Shikinami. Her first name comes from Asuka Saki (?? ???, Saki Asuka), the main character of the Japanese manga Super Girl Asuka (??????, Cho Shojo Asuka), written by Shinji Wada.[3]
The original animation series was written and directed by Hideaki Anno, and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was responsible for the character design. In the story, Asuka is a 14-year-old genius and beautiful girl who fought against the apostles in an EVA II plane. She has a strong personality and full of action, but as the plot develops, her self-esteem gradually collapses and her inner fragility is revealed.
