SAAB J-29 Tunnan

Mod Vincent  7.5 years ago

Swedish jet fighter the J-29 Tunnan (Barrel) first flown 1948 and introduced to the swedish air force 1950. After the 2nd world war it was decided that sweden needed better airforce using the newcome of jet propulsion tech. The saab team in charge of this machine led by Lars Brising was very into the P-80 shooting star and thereby wanted an cigar shaped fuselage. But as it was voted down they went with a barrel shape instead, Now you see why its called ''Tunnan (Barrel)'' With a top speed for about 450 mph - 500 mph it was rather good. Only 661 of these machines where built and are today placed in museums around sweden as it was retired in 1976. (Act 1- Landing gear lights)

@Othawne No problem! As it turns out, Swedish weapons either sees almost no combat or get used by the millions by several dozen nations.

Cue the Bofors 40mm AA cannon.

Cool! Did you know it was the only Swedish-designed warplane to actually shoot at something in war? In the 1960's, five aircraft were deployed in Congo during the Katanga Secession crisis in support of UN peacekeeping operations. As there were few aerial threats, the jets were used mostly for ground attack. In this role they proved successful. One aircraft was lost in an accident, and the remaining four were scrapped when the crisis was over, since Sweden didn't want to pay for the cost of shipping back obsolete aircraft surplus to requirements.
