Lift the VTOL slider to the top, once that's done I recommend lifting the clutch (4) so the engine starts rotating the way it's supposed to and doesn't have any problems, it should work well anywhere between 5% and 80%, if you go lower it might not be able to complete a rotation, higher it still works but the creation starts moving and the 3rd gear messes things up, going into 2nd and 1st shouldn't be much of an issue at 100%, for 3rd gear you should lower it, otherwise it starts breaking. Engine on throttle, clutch in 4, 1st in 1, 2nd in 2 and 3rd in 3, very straight forward. Don't have two gears engaged at the same time for obvious reasons, you're free to improve it and I'd like to see people try and build vehicles that use this. Have fun and enjoy.

Excellent! I was looking for a reference as I was trying to build one of my own. This is a nice way of dealing with the clutch and gear shift!
