The Sd.Kfz.141/1 Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf L is a medium-sized tank operated by the German Army during World War II.
Following Panzer I, which was intended for training and technical verification, and Panzer II, an expanded version of Panzer I, the German Army proceeded with the development of its main tank. The new tank was developed by incorporating the lessons learned from the Spanish Civil War and the latest technology of the time.
In 1935, the German Army Ordnance Department presented the specifications for the new tank to domestic companies. In response, Daimler-Benz and Krupp built prototypes, and after comparative tests, Daimler-Benz's proposal was adopted.
In 1939, the new tank, which had undergone various improvements from the prototype, was officially adopted as "Panzerkampfwagen III (Tank No. III).
The Panzer III had a large turret, which was unusual at the time. It had a crew of five, each of whom had a dedicated role. This reduced the workload of the crew and improved the team's offensive capability.
The main gun, from Type A to Type G, was a 37mm anti-tank gun. However, when the Soviet Army began to introduce T-34 type tanks on the Eastern Front, the lack of firepower was exposed. 37mm anti-tank guns could not break through the armor of the T-34.
Therefore, from the Type H, a 50mm cannon was installed.
Type L was equipped with a long-barreled 50mm gun and additional armor on the turret and the front of the cockpit.
The Panzer III was easy to handle, and many derivatives were created. Among them, the Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III), an assault gun that used the chassis of the Panzer III, became the most widely manufactured combat vehicle in the German Army.
However, as the Allied forces began to introduce heavy tanks to the battlefield, the Panzer III gradually became obsolete as the main tank, and its role was given over to the Panther (Panzer V) and the Tiger (Panzer VI).
