General History

Mary Rose capsizes. Artwork by Geoff Hunt
The Mary Rose was the favorite ship of English King Henry VIII. First sailing in 1511 she would serve in most of his wars for the next 34 years. Despite an illustrious career, she is most well-known for being the only ship to sink at the Battle of the Solent on July 19, 1545 as a result of her Gunports filling with water.
More famous still is the fact that she was raised from the depths in 1982 and is now on display in Portsmouth, next to HMS Victory in a temperature-controlled museum building. Over 3,000 artifacts were recovered from the wreck, making the ship a Tudor time capsule, showcasing an incredible display of all aspects of Tudor life and warfare, from her massive bronze guns to shoes and manicure kits.

She's beautiful. It's not every day that we get a 16th century boat.
