The Escort Enemy was added as a hidden aircraft to the base game 9.3 years ago as a stand-in enemy for the Bomber escort mission, and as a randomly spawned ai aircraft. It originally had only 4 guardians as it's weaponry making it quite easy to kill. It's design was very similar to the Kicking Fish, albeit with some pieces removed. Although it has no apparent real world counterpart, It's design appears to take ques from several cold war era aircraft produced by McDonald Douglas.
Flying tips:
Critical speed in this aircraft is between 140 and 150 with flaps and slats down. maintaining and rotating at that speed is key for takeoff and landing. This plane lacks an afterburner but it has very good loiter time because of that.
Controls: Conventional controls with Throttle controlling Throttle and Trim controlling pitch trim.
Vtol is inactive as most jets this is based on didn't have a full authority flap lever and instead had a flaps switch. Speaking of switches here are your AG's.
1 Flaps and slats setting
2 air brake
3 Tail hook
4 Canopy
5 Wing fold
6 Emergency weapons release
7 Lights
8 Engine Master. plane will spawn with engine running but this will toggle power.
Weapons:
This version now has a slightly more diverse set of weapons. while maintaining all 4 original hardpoints it now has an additional centerline point and a single machine gun in the left wing root. two of it's missiles have been replaced with LAU-10 rocket pods and it now has a single MK82 bomb. The guardians have been swapped with rebalanced Aim9B Sidewinders.
Trivia:
-It's inlets, only two, Protrude out and down from the rest of the fuselage. This along with its high mounted main wings and lack of a "flying tail" are similar to the Douglas F3D Skyknight all weather interceptor.
-Its all delta flight surface configuration gives it a topdown profile earily similar to the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk attack aircraft.
-It's lack of a gun, while most likely done for simplicity reasons and use necessity, is very similar to early models of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom.
- like the Escort Enemy,McDonnell Douglas had a habit of designing jets with only 4 missiles in the early stages of the cold war.
This version, While making the jet VR ready. enlarges the design and adds details needed for player use such as a full cockpit with controls, flaps, a rudder, More diverse weapons including a gun, aerial refueling capability, a "flying tail" and landing gear.
Trivia about this new aircraft:
The right side of the cockpit holds all the switches and levers, while the left side is completely bare. this is a reference to the A-4 Skyhawk which has an opening compartment on the left side that holds a fold up thermobaric sheild for when it is used as a nuclear strike jet, as well as food and water for long flights.
