In 2551, the UNSC needed a better weapon. Something that would replace the MA3A. The MA3A was most liked by the black marketSource, but i could not find why it was obsolete or what the ammo count was. However, it would be changed by the legendary MA5B. The most likely reason for change? Modulability.
For example in The Fall of reach, Spartans were equipped with “ Modified MA5B Assault rifles, adapted to mount silencers”-Source,Source
In Operation Silent Storm, reports say that Spartan-II’s added “ underslung M301 40mm launchers to fire HE grenades”.
The downsides are that this gun features NO RETICLE. The reticle is thanks to the eyes your mother birthed you with, or the rich boy’s MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor/Mark V “ heads-up display that links to the brain and hands, and can identify equipment and display information about it when it is picked up by the wearer”-Source
The performance of the MA5B is breathtaking. By itself, it has the ability to break through body armor, some foes, and light vehicles.-Source
However, when “Shredder ammo” is used, it is deemed “highly effective against infantry targets such as Covenant grunt soldiers”.
One spartan, known as John 117, called it “decent” and also placed it in the “close quarters combat” range.
But the marines? They loved it. So much so, that when they gave them the 32 round instead of the 60 round, marines from E2-BAG/1/7 were in “frustration.” Poor guys.

According to The Art of Halo, McLees did not know of the F2000 until after the game was even finished; ‘I don't know when the images of the FN F2000 appeared, but I didn't see them until three or four months after the game shipped, and I thought 'Oh great. Now everyone's going to think I swiped the design from Fabrique National.' It was surreal to see how close the Halo assault rifle was to its real-life counterpart... and it was all totally by accident.’”
