Wind-Powered Klann Walker

Hello all, this is Snow back. I’ve decided to post something that’s been decaying away in my saves folder. It isn’t up to the standard of quality I’d like it to be at, but the fact that I haven’t been posting anything mechanical got on my nerves.

Today I bring you guys something that’s a bit more complicated than usual. It took an awful amount of manual tweaking to get this right with the angles and lengths and stuff, but I got it to work somewhat. This is an Klann-linkage contraption capable of mechanical movement in the presence of wind. I guess I wanted to do something with the wind feature.

Main features

  • A rig composed of a propeller (taken from SR’s piston engine post) and a simple gear rig, and also the important Klann linkage that I’ve created from scratch on each side for a machine with two legs. I initially had four to make a quadruped, but encountered some issues with power transfer. For now, this will be the Mark I with only two legs.

Details

  • A propeller that drives a shaft, converting circular motion from one direction to another

  • The linkage, color coded for “levels” individual parts are placed on (this is the meat of this build)

Instructions for use:

  1. When you load it up, adjust your wind settings so direction of the wind is the direction the mech is moving in. It won’t be exact, but just make it close as possible.

  2. After you’ve prepared the direction, pump the wind levels up to a minimum of about 35km/h, this will get you to a walking speed of about 8km/h. I recommend 40km/h for a nice ride, higher works until the actual entirety of the mech is pushed by the wind around 60+km/h windspeed.

I know that it’s not the most beautiful thing in the site, but as far as I know this is the first Klann linkage to come on the site. Plus, this linkage is very, very effective: it almost negates unnecessary movement and maximizes the actual “walking“ phase.

As always, have fun with this one-
