An F/A-18C of the Paternian Air Force. Developed from the YF-17 prototype light fighter that competed with the plane that woudl become the F-16, the F/A-18 would become one of the most popular fighter aircraft in the world. While its updated counterparts have many of the features of heavier aircraft such as weaponry and radar, it retains the performance and maneuverability of its light fighter origins. In the C&C Roleplay, it is the principal fighter of the Paternian Air Force, alongside the F-15 Eagle. In the late 1970's, it was realized that the existing "Fighter Trinity" of the Paternian Air Force, the F-104, the F-4, and the F-5, were becoming increasingly dated. Thus, design studies were produced to replace each one of them. The F-15 seemed promising, with its combination of high maneuverability, performance, and weapons load. However, the F-15 proved too expensive to be used as a light fighter. After exhaustive trials, the F-18 was selected to replace the F-5. The competing F-16 design, while less suitable to light fighter requirements because of its single-engine configuration (which made it more vulnerable to ground fire), replaced the F-104 due to its incredible performance.
