Supermarine Southampton

52.5k Tang0five  5.2 years ago

Ladies, gentlemen. The Supermarine Southampton. I think of all my flying boats I’m most chuffed with this hull and how it turned out. I actually made the fuselage and hull last June and have only just got round to completing the build.

The Southampton was designed by the same legend that gave us the spitfire, R. J. Mitchell and was one of the more successful interwar flying boats. Designed for reconnaissance she had a crew of 5 with 3 distinct positions for the mounting of machine guns. The Southampton first flew in 1925 and entered service with the RAF in the same year after being rather unusually ordered straight off the drawing board.

Some notes on this build. Speed is exaggerated somewhat to achieve takeoff from the surface of the water and she is rather nose heavy with the trim unable to offset it. This was an unfavourable trade off reducing the nose ploughing into the water on take off causing a cartwheel and inflight handling. By all means this is a hands on kite!

Well that’s all folks, goggles on chaps! Ta ta!!

@Tang0five I've just bought the mobile app and flew it around on my phone, it's great, I was even doing inverted circuits :) mby it's just playing it on the phone but once it's off the deck it's no problem at all.
