What causes the “drifting” when stopped on the tarmac?

30.4k Hyattorama  4.8 years ago

Hey guys,

I’ve been working on modifying an old build, and I only just today noticed that now the plane is doing that thing where it sorta drifts around when it’s stopped on the runway. I tried changing out the wheels... I’ve put about two hours into it at this point and haven’t figured it out. Does anyone know any tricks for troubleshooting this sort of thing?
Thanks!

It usually happens on low physics, at least on Android.

Mmm, okay. My build is less than 1,100lb lol so I must’ve knackered something real bad...

:( :( well if I happen to find a solution in my quest, I will be happy to share it with you lol. At least I feel better knowing that other top builders struggle with this as well (not that I consider myself a top builder, but you know what I mean)

it is especially noticeable on heavy weight builds (+70 ton tanks)

All that extremum stuff? Yeah I’ve never touched that since I’ve absolutely no idea what it means lol. But thanks for the tip, I will definitely play around with it!

Ok I’ll try that, thanks :) although I think it’s already at like 300 or 400% lol...

Yeah, when completely stopped. It starts turning in place very slowly all by itself, even on totally flat ground. I believe it only happens to heavily XML modded builds. @vcharng

Yeah me too lol. I was working on the starling to make it a better STOL plane (btw did that competition already happen?), and I realized it was doing this drifting. I keep a save file for every step when I’m building and modding. So I had like 30 save files from the original plane till now. I looked through all of them to figure out when it started (cause I apparently didn’t notice the change even though it happened a long time ago). Once I found the save file where it first started, I spent like two hours trying to figure out the difference between the two (it was from like 6 months ago lol) and I couldn’t figure it out :( @Chancey21

Actually no, I’m talking about when the plane is stopped on the runway, and then it starts to kinda move around slowly, even with the brake on usually. I think it only happens to heavily XML modded builds. But thank you so much for the help! @Mysweetbologna

Do you mean when stoppING or stoppED?
having too soft suspensions could cause drifting left and right during braking action, but it shouldn't happen when the plane is stationary.

    I hate this
I don’t know why at all

I've found that increasing the friction of the rear wheel (at least if it's a taildragger) works pretty well

There’s 4 settings below the brake torque and they adjust what angle the tyre looses grip at, and the shape of the grip curve. I need to experiment with which one does what and stuff but yeah. Making them a lower number seems to work best.

    Dumb tyre physics :(

If you’re talking about landing, try having some air brakes, it will reduce the speed, also check the traction of the tires, there is a manual option as well.

If it’s liftoff, then your plane is out of balance, there’s a problem in simpleplanes with the CoM being very sensitive, just a few hundred pounds to one side would make it roll on the runway.
