Game AI and Turret building.

So, I'm working on a bomber and one thing a bomber needs is turrets for self defence.
I have had a look at the 'best' turret and while it is much better than anything I can come up with at the moment, I'd like to see something better or if I can, make something myself.
The main issue is that you can not fly the bomber and control the turrets at the same time, it just does not work, you end up dead pretty quick.
Would it be possible to somehow link the game AI to a turret?
They managed to do it extremely well in a game called "X-Wing Alliance".
Fly any of the ships that have turrets on them and you can either 'get into the turret' while the pc flies the ship -OR- fly the ship while the PC operates the turret.
The Azzameen family transport is quite deadly, despite basically being a cargo hauler, when you set the turret on auto :)
While it would be nice to have the same thing in game here, it is like asking for a miracle, but I think the auto turret is doable.
So, anyone have any ideas that will point me in the right direction?

Work on the turret is on hold, until I can figure out a way to make what I want to do happen.

@Minecraftpoweer Nope, had no idea that it wasn't doable until I tried. I learned something along the way too.
I can now make mods, albeit simple ones.

@Mickk that wasn't obvious to you?

@Minecraftpoweer Discovered by trial and error that you can not mix and match properties from one part with another.
Simply put, you can not add the tracking part from a missile to a rotator/hinge and have it show up as a mod, they plain old do not like each other.
Once the week end hits, I'm going to try and make rotator/hinge in one part, something that will point up and down AND go around in a circle.

@Mickk yeah that is what I did but it's still annoying to do without the missile exploding or escaping the turret.

@Minecraftpoweer Located a list of XML inputs by the same guy who made the 'Overload' mod, WNP78.
Tweaked an "Interceptor" missile so that it's lock on is set to 180 degrees. Use 'maxTargetingAngle' to do that in 'Overload'. That missile now locks on to anything within view of the cockpit if you are looking straight ahead.
The missile has some sort of link to a tracking system built in, if that could be linked to a gun, then we would be well on the way to having a turret that actually tracks a target.

Going to tag @WNP78, maybe they will have some tips, if they are still around.

    *EDIT, spelling error. Oops.

@Minecraftpoweer Uploaded the aircraft I was talking about an hour or so ago. It's a bomber and it has nice blue wings. Feel free to mess with it.

@Mickk I really want to make a much more effective one but It was so hard to make that one that i'll wait more until trying. Also I have a lot of builds I want to make.

@CrazyChildEngineer Yeah, I do sort of. Definitely something to work on.
Something I did earlier (my time) was put weapons on one of my big ships, including Air to Air. Being a boat, I ended mounting the cockpit on a block attached to a rotor, to get that up/down movement for the AA sight, it was very effective, but I need to mount the missiles further off the deck as they tend to drop a bit before going skyward. I did however kill a couple of planes with that boat!

@Minecraftpoweer Yes, yours is the turret I was talking about. Shotgun is right, looks like fireworks going off, pretty effective in close though. The auto aim doesn't work with my plane, but if I 'sink' them into the hull of the aircraft they will at least look the part.
For now though, lets just say my aircraft has a 'sting' in the tail. ;)

    This could be a mod...

I have kindoff made an auto aiming one but it isn't very realistic because it shoots like a shotgun and is not accurate enough for a normal gun. Also it doesn't work with all planes.

I have never heard of AI controlling turrets, but you could assign all your control surfaces to a activation group and the turret to an activation group and a gyroscope to an activation group; when you want to use a turret, you turn off all the activation groups of except for the turret and gyroscope then you can use trim to control the height. I hope you understand.
