@JetWondy delete and reinstall simpleplanes and select create desktop shortcut or there may be a setting wich allows you to make a shortcut but when that is done you can open it with the shortcut.
copy the aircraft link or ID (the content of the .splane file), open the designer and press ctrl+L
@Minecraftpoweer but I can't find the steam client bootstrapper on linux...
when you try to open the file t should probably prompt you with a window asking what program you want to open the file with, that is how it works on windows but it probably is the same on linux
