Overview

The GLA is a violent, non-state actor, originally formed to oppose Chinese rule over Kazakhstan. However, it evolved to oppose the super-states, notably Awwam, Paternian Republic, the Hellenic-Balkan Democratic Union, and Gran Hispana. It would also fragment into three groups: the GLA, the True GLA, and the Real GLA.

Origins

The GLA was created as the Kazakh Liberation Army, a powerful nationalist organization seeking independence from China, led by Sanya Slava and Petya Nika. Initially, they were unsuccessful, and suffered numerous setbacks in combat against the Chinese Army.

Under the pretense that the region would be made wholly independent by the Caliphate of the Awwam, they assisted the Awwami Royal Army's advance into Kazakhstan. However, Awwam did not fully keep to its promise, and significant areas western and southern Kazakhstan would be occupied by Awwam.

Slava and Nika were divided over the matter of what to do after. Slava advocated that the group have already established an independent Kazakh state, while Nika advocated to drive out Awwam. During an argument, Nika shot Slava, killing her. He then purged the KLA of Slava's supporters in order to consolidate power.

A vengeful China and India, suffering defeat and territorial loss to Awwam, supported the reorganized KLA. The KLA grew in power, but never could deliver a significant blow against Awwam. However, the fact the group was not immediately destroyed by Awwam inspired other groups to rise up against their governments.

Nika would meet with many of their leaders in a meeting now known as the Tangiers Agreement. The various separatist and communist groups agreed that if success is to be assured, then they must cooperate in a global movement. This is often considered the foundation of the GLA.

Growth

Initially, the GLA suffered heavy setbacks as the existing movements within began to fight amongst each other almost immediately. In addition, these groups were being suppressed heavily in their home territories, and was soon almost a shadow.

However, it would find fertile ground to expand in the aftermath of the Paternian-Ecuador War, which resulted in heavy losses and no clear victory for all participants. While the liberal political structure and relative social hegemony of the Paternian Republic allowed it to weather the ensuring social and political instability, the coalition made up of Gran Hispana, the HBDU, and Awwam did not have these factors.

These factors, as well as depleted troop numbers and increased division as a result of the participation in the conflict, allowed the GLA to quickly amass large numbers supporters from disgruntled minorities.

With the rapid expansion and decentralized command of the GLA came an almost immediate fragmentation, splitting into three major groups; the original GLA, the True GLA, and the Real GLA.

While the original GLA would grow in southern and eastern Asia, the Real GLA would drive the original group out of its Kazakh homelands and expand into Awwami territories.

In the meantime, the True GLA would find fertile roots in the politically and socially unstable post-war Gran Hispana. While it would expand its operations to Southern Paternian Mexico, it failed to make the impact necessary to penetrate further north. Paternia, while a large, diverse nation, is generally of similar composition, sufficient that ethnic and racial boundaries are not particularly prevalent.

Aside from Southern Mexican separatists, Paternia was not affected by these groups as much. However, the TGLA would still have its sights on Paternia, and found allies among the exiled drug cartels, who were driven out of Mexico by the Paternian Army, and began strikes into Mexico.

Current Status

The GLA and related organizations continue to be a relevant threat to global security, with their terroristic ways that undermine the authority as well as sowing the seeds for ethnic conflict that is certain to brew if the GLA is to win.
